The 3DS remake comes out tomorrow, but mine arrived in the post today. I forgot just how much I loved this game. The multiplayer mode is vastly improved too. Does anyone else have fond memories of Lylat Wars (otherwise known as Starfox 64)?
Yes, I was just playing it a month ago to get some medals. Do the new voice recordings ruin the game? Because I am pretty attached to them, they're all great.
Do a barrel-roll! :D

Was the first game I played when I got my N64.

Wait, tell me they haven't changed the voices?!
They have re-recorded them but they seem mostly faithful. Presumably they re-recorded them because the original clips were at an unbelievably low sample rate and would sound like crap now.

I'm slightly sad that they've removed the 'Lylatian' speech option. Perhaps I just have to unlock it or something? I remember the boss of the meteor field sounding hilarious in Lylatian.

Anyway, the new multiplayer mode has an option to turn on Mario Kart style powerups in addition to traditional items like bombs and laser upgrades. It's also blissfully fog free and runs at a decent frame rate. :P
I really loved Starfox 64, it was the first game I got with my N64. It really stands up tremendously well even if there are some little control niggles.
Lylat Wars has very little content, but it's still one of my favourite Virtual Console titles. Doubt I'll get it for full price for the 3DS, though, assuming I even somehow get to afford the console any time soon.
The best thing I love about Lylat Wars, is that the game is so replayable.

You'll spend ages trying to get the medals on each level.

And there are several routes through the game so its never normally a chore.

Plus most of the levels were just brilliant.

Varied, challeging, and with suprisingly memorable bosses.

I am getting my copy tomorrow, and no doubt its going to be my most played 3DS game. :D
Like RetroVortex, I always found it massively replayable. It's true there are only 15 levels, but most of them have two different ways of finishing them.

...plus they're just amazing. I only wish that they added some extra levels in the remake. It's still possible they have I guess but I'm not expecting it.

Okay so I got the 3DS version.

I think this may be the best remake ever.

Actually scratch that,

Its the BEST GAME EVER!!!!

(Especially the new credits theme that plays after the regular credits. That tune is so damn beautiful it almost makes me cry. :') )

RetroVortex: ...
Isn't it just the perfect choice of game to remake in 3D as well? The normal scrolling levels particularly benefit... you know exactly how far away the enemies and pickups are now.

Yeah.

I also think they have made the lasers fire just a tad quicker too.
Just seems that bit more responsive.

I even got 4 medals on my first playthrough! :D

I just wish I had some more people with 3DS so I could play so multiplayer, (which looks epic btw. With the mario kart styled powerups, and extra maps, and single cart play).

I'm lucky enough to have a brother with a 3DS so I've played it a bit already. I think you're right about it being a tiny bit more responsive... my brother and I also reckon you can turn a bit faster in all-range mode although that could just be because we're used to our extremely worn out N64 controllers.

The wobblier the stick gets, the more of the outer ranges of movement you lose. In other words, you push the stick to the edge, but it only registers as being further in (which can result in characters running slower because it thinks you're only pushing the stick halfway).
My copy should arrive today. I'm pumped to play it, if it's actually as good as ya'll say!
