Is there a list anywhere of how long it's been since the various games in GOG's catalog has been on sale?

This would be quite handy for determining if it's worth waiting for a promo, or if you should just pay full price.
I guess you could compile such a list using GOG's twitter feed to determine the previous offers.

That's a list of games sorted by their introduction into the GOG catalog. I don't see how that's useful in determining how long it's been since they were on sale.

It can be done in theory, but it takes up an ENORMOUS amount of time, because you have to check every month in the news archive for promo news items, and note down which games were featured.
In the beta days, you could just search the news archive for individual game titles, which would maybe be a little bit shorter (not sure, though), but now you can't even do that.

Technically speaking, in America, if somebody says 'how long has it been since something was on sale', it can also mean 'how long has something been available'. :)

Only the most recent games are excluded from sales. Sales on GOG have sometimes been repeated very quickly. Other games have never been discounted. So how recent the last sale was is not a useful gauge at all as to whether or not it will be on sale again soon.

Add to that the fact that GOG seem to be doing a lot of sales aimed at newbies and it's anyone's guess.

That said, the last Christmas sale was very comprehensive. I'd imagine that most games will be discounted again then.
In other words: save money until December. Then buy the year's worth of games.

IF there will be a sale, that is.
A number of people were sure there would be a birthday sale in September, and there was none. Baldur's gate (and the other Atari-Hasbro games) was the gift from GOG towards us.
Maybe this christmas, there will be no sale, but the introduction of the new large-scale publisher the staff was hinting about.
It hasn't been that long since the rebellion promo was around, so i don't think there's any way to determine when a game will be on a promo.

That's different. A sale wasn't promised on GOG's birthday. It's just that after last year we did hope for one. They simply celebrated it by coming out of beta and with the release of the D&D games. Which is fair enough. It's definitely a big enough deal after all. Even if coming out of beta seems to have left us with more bugs than there was during the beta phase...

Now sure, GOG could promise us a present for Christmas and that present be a new publisher, but no discounts at all over Christmas would be pretty dumb for any sales-orientated company.

The sad thing is, with the release schedule we're seeing lately, a new major publisher doesn't sound nearly as exciting as it could. Even if EA came on board, with one release a week it would take ages before everything interesting gets here.

I agree with that last remark, especially knowing that other outlets will also certainly have huge sales.
I just say we should not take a sale, at least one as grand as last year's, for granted.

Yeah, agreed. Anything could happen after all. GOG hasn't been so consistent lately so I really don't know what to expect from them anymore. But that aside, I'm inclined to wait for Christmas. It's not so long to wait now, after all.
If you go to the news stories on the main page and keep clicking on "more news," you can go pretty far back in the news archives (possibly all the way to the beginning, although I haven't tried). You can then click on each promo to see what went on sale, until you find the game you're looking for.

Obviously, that's a cumbersome way to research past promos, especially if the game you're interested in hasn't gone on sale for a year or more. But unfortunately I can't find a way to search the news archives, so that's the only method I know.
