CaptainGyro: I have a MSNBC logo and some other shit burnt into my lcdtv.

HoneyBakedHam: At least it ain't the Fox logo :-)

Actually, my experience with a mid range quality Toshiba is that persistence will fade over time. But I'm not sure if that is always true. The Toshiba in question will occasionally darken on the left and right after extended viewing of a non HD channel in 4:3... but soon enough, that fades back to normal.
Hmmm. I have a Toshiba REGZA 40 inch LCD.

Never had burn in problems, and my flatmate sometimes leaves the tv on while the pc is plugged in so the image is still. Never had burn in issues.
like I said the result is from watching msnbc with the logo on for 8 hours a day practically every day for more than a year. To even clearly see the letters "msnbc" you need to have a solid colored bright background, so it's really not that big of a deal. Without the bright background there is still a dark smudge that's pretty noticeable. but I got used to it.

I'm just saying it is possible, but you really have to do something excessive

Agreed. My laptop's LCD after about 4-5 years started showing some "image persistence" too where the menu bar was (which makes sense since much of the time that is on the screen for many hours a day, every day, for years), but it wasn't nearly as bad as the burn-in that CRT or plasmas get and it took years of the same image to develop it.

Modern Toshies are pretty good for avoiding image retention, I've been using mine for a bit over a year playing a variety of games on it for extremely long periods. My old viewsonic lcd had the mass effect hud stuck on it for a hell of a long time, made star trek feel like a game though

Roberttitus: I just got a new 1080i LCD TV & I understand that they can get image burn in. This seems to be a problem that I don't want to encounter (I mean Jesus Christ, why spend $500 on something only for the goddamn thing to be ruined because of a channel logo or something). How bad of a problem is this? How long does it take before such a thing would happen? Can it be fixed?

Thanks in advance guys.
Yeah, don't worry about burn in, it shouldn't be a problem.

I did read in the manual for my TV however (I have an LED HDTV, not much different, but) that viewing content in the 4:3 format for too long on my TV (with the black bars on the right and left sides) could cause some sort've burn in, or cause some sort've damage with some of th pixels on the TV. But that's just what I read in the manual and I've never really needed to pay attention to it anyway since I haven't had any problems with that in the one year I've owned my HDTV.

Of course, its still not a good idea to leave a movie image paused for hours on end, as I'm sure this would still have some negative effects on the TV.
