cjrgreen: Teachers do have the annoying habit of thinking that the way they were taught was the One True Way :)

If you were taught in Traditional English Latin, I have the greatest sympathy for you. It is an abomination. All the others are at least a little bit tolerable, and Church Latin (both the Italian and German forms) is a beautiful language for singing.
I guess it was Northern European Latin (Beeing a german school). But it was really not my language. I did it because the "Latinum" (Latin degree) was back than still mandatory for a lot of university courses. Luckily they dropped that requiremt for most topics nowadays...

Don't sure about today, but at many humanistic schools (like mine) it was obligatory to learn latin as first or second foreign language. They told us with latin it's easier to learn all the other languages, so my first foreign language was latin. I wouldn't say it was the wrong decision, but like you I was very happy when it was over. Later there was the option to choose between french and ancient greek - surprisingly no one was interested in ancient greece.
