So I'm contributing a Steam game to a Goglodyte's seasonal giveaway, and I've never done this before, and I'm a bit confused about the mechanics of it.

I own a few extra licenses to this game, since I bought a bulk package of copies a couple of years ago to give away - everything's legal here. I know how to give a Steam game by email and via the Steam client, but what I don't know is whether there's a way to extract the game key so I can give that to the person organizing the GA, so the key can be sent to the winner for activation. I tried giving a copy of the game to myself, as I would do here on GOG, but Steam sends along a link that wants to add the game to my Steam account (which fails safe, because I already own an active copy of it). No handy activation key.

I don't mind doing the transaction manually by email once the GA is won, but I wonder if there's a way to get the key out in the clear. I've checked here in the forum, but searching on "Steam key gift" yields a mmmmilion hits, and all of the info I find out on the web - including the FAQ at Steamgifts.com - talks about doing the email link exchange.

Any insights?

When you buy the key you set it up as a gift and send it to an email address. Generally it should also give you the key at the time of purchase, which you can then distribute. I've done this myself a couple times and generally it's fairly straightforward. All the options will be presented to you at the time of purchase.

I think this might be different because I bought a ten-pack license back a few years ago, and currently the games that remain sit in my Steam inventory. I can absolutely give them to people via email; what I can't seem to do, at least in this case, is send the key to someone so they can activate it. The only mechanism I am seeing to give with is the one that sends a link to someone and brings them to a web page where they can sign into Steam and add the game to their account, or install Steam and add the game to their account. No visible key. I mean, I can do this, but it's less flexible. Maybe it's because I bought it as a bulk package and not a standalone game?

There is a key-looking number as part of the link redirect, but it's 16 digits long, not 15. Anyway, thanks for your answer.

Yup, you cannot turn a gift into a key or a key into a gift. If you have individual copies you have to send them individually as gifts via email, gifting on your friend's list, or the trade window. If you have packs, you need to send them to someone to activate a copy and send you back the other(s).

A 10 pack though? What game has that many? Shootmania is just a 6 pack and I was unaware of larger ones. :o

Gotcha - so for GOG GA purposes, I'll need to contact the winner directly via email. That's fine, I guess, I was just baffled by my inability to locate the key. The pack was for individual titles, all of which I can give individually, incidentally - I think it was an experiment, and I guess it didn't work out because they've hardly done it since. The bulk license is for World of Goo, which was winning all kinds of indie awards at the time, and I think it was 8 or 10 licenses for $12 or so. It might have been as much as $20, but I think it was less.

Thanks for your help.
