I'm getting a new laptop soon and I'm currently working on several old Sierra adventure games. The Quest for Glory series, Space Quest, Gabriel Knight, etc.

How can I back my saved games up? What exactly should I copy from the game's root directory?
For Quest for Glory, assuming you are running them through DosBox and not ScummVM, you need to backup the "GlorySG.*", which has the GlorySG.000 to GlorySG.019 (saved games) and GlorySG.dir which is the list of the saves.
Of course, you can always copy the directory somewhere else and check if those are truly the saves.
As I recall, most of Sierra Games have similar save system, though obviously not named "GlorySG".
There are also the exported characters, if you want to keep them. The name of the files is gloryx.sav, where x is the number of the game at the end of which the character was exported.

torin's passage has TORINSG.CAT.

just always safe to just copy the whole root folder (without the movie directories) if you dont have much space.
