I'm sure I read here that it can be done sometime during either d/l or installation.

Basically I have 2 GG games (NWN D and Lost Horizon) I want to back up.

Any help would be great.

Thanks :)

edit: obviously they have to be non steam, non activate games, or what GG calls "no drm" or sometimes "other drm" games...

Also, just to be a little clearer, after you exit the dllder, be sure to choose "save files" then look for the GG temp folder on your harddrive, the exe. and associated files should be there for you to save anywhere you like :)

Here's that again, just for everybody's information, you can right click the little chain by a post to create a link directly to the post you want to refer to.

For instance http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/how_do_i_back_up_a_gamersgate_game/post2

No worries, it's just more convenient than describing the number down from the top. And for some people they may have changed the number of posts per page.
Good thing that they usually inform about some problems with installation files. I mean when I bought Risen in sale which supposed to be DRM free, it asked serial key. Well, they fixed that after a bit over a week. And they informed also (even though) haven't bought that game but secret files 3 installation is german or was.. Anyway, just rambling.

How do you even back up things when now usually every game is so big? Still burn them in discs?

Personally, I use crashplan and typically back up to both external HDD and their servers. It's completely unlimited storage space and there's both individual and family plans available.

If you're going the disc route, make sure that you use dvdisaster or similar and check the discs regularly for defects. Also, Quickpar isn't a bad idea regardless of what you do, just in case the backup service misses bit rot. I use that on all my really important files.

Is that crashplan.com really free, I mean I don't trust sites with such happy faces in front page.. =P
I download the game, then before i install it I copy the loader and temporary file to another location. Install the game, from the original d/l then delete the temp files - this leaves me with the installed game, and a copy of the installer + temp files as backup.

The client is free and you can swap storage space with friends or use your own disks. What you pay for is using their servers if you choose to and support.

But yes, if you're using your disks or a friends then you don't have to pay for it.

I personally bought a couple of 2 terabyte hard disks, which I'm using with an external USB HDD case.

Not all games are that big, especially when we are talking about GOG, DotEmu, HumbleBundle etc. games Still, I am long way from backing up even nearly all my games. I have done that already for my DotEmu and HumbleBundle games (it was just a matter of making a few clicks and waiting), plus any games I may have bought directly from developers. From GOG, I've yet to back up most of my games, simply due to sheer amount of them. Same for the couple of games I have on GamersGate.

From Steam, I haven't yet made any permanent backups (less reason at least for those Steam games which are not DRM-free). I once temporarily backed all my currently installed Steam games, but that was just to move them to my new PC without having to re-download all of them over again. They were around 166 gigabytes together uncompressed, I think, but as said it was just some of my Steam games, not even nearly all.

I prioritize backing up older games that I don't see getting updates anymore, and games I may feel a bit concerned (like the Space Rangers game recently disappearing from stores; I decided to make a local backup of the GOG versions, just in case). But mostly I don't download most games specifically to make backups, but after I have downloaded them to try them out, why wouldn't I simply keep the downloaded files, since I have them on the HDD already?

(cue in someone telling Pbay is his personal backup server... PB is blocked here anyway, and all the other potential problems with that idea.)

Thanks for the replies :)
Hmmm, is it just me, or has anyone noticed that it seems perhaps GG has gotten wise to the work-around to save/back up your games there? Been a while since I purchased anything there, but I recently bought Star Wolves 3 on sale, and when trying the old copy/paste/save the temp file with the .exe file to another location so I could save it, and transfer to my gaming computer, I found there is no longer a true .exe file now, instead there is a "launch" file, which only allows you to install from Gamers Gate server. Not really complaining that much, as I know that it is clearly thier policy as clearly written out, but definitely bummed though. Any one else notice this, or is it just this game, or perhaps I am going about saving the games .exe file wrong now?

(me thinks they finely wised up tho...)

Works for me for all my GG games.

I have just been backing up my games over the last couple of days and what I did with those GG games was to wait for it to download, and when the installer runs I'll just leave it in the background and go to the installer directory, make a copy of the setup.exe, then cancel the installer. I think as soon as you cancel the installer the GG downloader renames setup.exe to 'launch' and does something else with it (simply renaming it back to setup.exe does not work).

If you already pressed cancel to the installer, just run the GG downloader again - it'll see that the files are all downloaded and runs the installer again. This time just make a backup of setup.exe.

After that just tell GG downloader you want to keep the temporary install files and that's it. You can delete the launch file too afterwards.
