Would anyone mind explain me about how to play games on DOSBox? It seems every time I try to mount a game (I need to mount the game before playing, right?) something goes wrong, I forget to do something, or I do some mistake.
A friend mine plays DOS games easily (without headaches) with boxer, but it's Mac OS only. :/
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------
...Don’t struggle with mounts and emulation settings; don’t nurse a greedy games database; don’t bang your head against a DOS prompt; just play your games. Boxer takes away the fuss and leaves the fun.

A pity there's not a program like that for Windows. So I'll have to use DOSBox (not that it's a bad program, it's a bit complicated). It would be good if someone here could explain me the basics about DosBox.

DaveO-MM: You'll need to know the special keys for DOSBox. Each game will require a specific number for speed to have the best performance.
================
5. Special Keys:
================
ALT-ENTER Switch to full screen and back.
ALT-PAUSE Pause emulation.
CTRL-F1 Start the keymapper.
CTRL-F4 Change between mounted disk-images. Update directory cache for all drives!
CTRL-ALT-F5 Start/Stop creating a movie of the screen. (avi video capturing)
CTRL-F5 Save a screenshot. (png)
CTRL-F6 Start/Stop recording sound output to a wave file.
CTRL-ALT-F7 Start/Stop recording of OPL commands.
CTRL-ALT-F8 Start/Stop the recording of raw MIDI commands.
CTRL-F7 Decrease frameskip.
CTRL-F8 Increase frameskip.
CTRL-F9 Kill dosbox.
CTRL-F10 Capture/Release the mouse.
CTRL-F11 Slow down emulation (Decrease DOSBox Cycles).
CTRL-F12 Speed up emulation (Increase DOSBox Cycles).
ALT-F12 Unlock speed (turbo button).
Other than the special keys above, all you really need to know is how to use the mount command. For example, let's say your C drive has a directory called Games. Just type mount C C:\Games. Type in the mounted drive letter, and you should now be in the contents of the Games directory. Run the game, and have fun!
P.S. - You may need to configure specific audio settings thru the game's install program, and as a general rule Soundblaster works best.

Thanks, Dave!

Titanium: What I meant to say was (didn't use enough words :P) we used to use DOS like people now use windows, just in a very primitive way. You had to know the right combination of correct words to issue a command, and that was just to get to the .exe. Now, when I use dosbox just for that goal, people are awestruck at the "complexity".

Ah, i see. I was kinda lost with the "i know what you mean" and a completely different thought following. I guess i was expecting an enter, or two, to separate the stream. Now when i think about it, i see, i became very limited in my understanding of written stuff.;P E-dumbed!:(
We know DosBOX is fairly easy to use, You don't tweak around with memory, due to DOS limitations [hours spent on tweaking to play Ultima 7..], and it even comes with TAB that finishes file/dir names. No more "to smartdrv or not to smartdrv", or perhaps LH that mouse driver, for it might come handy..
Why frontend, when You can have the full retro experience!:P

Hey, I miss the games, not the OS ;-p

Wishbone: Hey, I miss the games, not the OS ;-p

Well, nor do i, nor will i miss windows, but in a era of 3d holographic projectors, a retro 2d gui [win emulation/vm] could be a neat thing, not just a fully 3d game launcher.
In 500 years no one will miss the petrol fueled cars, yet when someone buys a hovercraft that resembles a Dodge Challenger for example, even though he can start the engine immediately, and run it silent, the true retro experience resolves around the slow starting roar, loud engine, and lots of smelly fumes.:>
The OS is kinda part of the experience.
Don't You tweak the games settings, to get better sound for example? Play around with Roland/GUS?
I was actually pretty excited when was testing older Windows versions on DOSBox. Sure, I could use the CD with VMs, but it kinda misses the point of going retro.:P
Don't You LOAD"*",8,1 anymore? ;)
I guess it all depends how much 'way back' one wants to travel, if it's solely for the games, then sure, but i like soaking into the feeling i had 20 years ago as much as i can.;)

more smileys added, so i won't be treated TOO seriously.;P

No, I don't ;-)
The C64 emulators I use have menu-based loading. I could just mount the disk and then type the commands myself, but I don't. The commands are still in my fingers though, with shortcuts even. So if I needed to, I wouldn't actually type "LOAD", I'd type "L+shift-O" :-D

So do i, and i also feel that. But if someone is not a CB native, or DOS native, he does not feel that LOAD, RUN, adjust fookin' tapehead, LOAD, RUN thing, or with DOS, the CD game, setup, setsound, confing, game executable thing, hence, loosing part of the experience, tiresome, tedious, no matter. Tadah!;P
BTW.
This may sound bad, but i've been recently adjusting the tapehead a lot. (go ahead, knock yourself out) Hooked up my original c64 to the TV. I still need to work around with resistors on the video cable, because i've got some pink/purplish lines tearing black stuff [last ninja 3 looks very badish]. And i gotta say, the nostalgia pump hit me way better than playing the games on the emu. So much better, even with the head, 10 second load times, sometimes glitchy controls [i need a better joystick].
I don't miss DOS that much, so i won't be assembling a SVGA, GUS, P100 PC anytime soon, especially that not all games will work on a P100, i'd have to change the mobos [more than 2] every time i'd wish to play something older [try Digger on a 286, hardest game ever, without slomo's and display corrections;P].
