Yeah, starting to look that way. Finally found a video of it, and it looked like they were moving through syrup. Darn shame, seeing how it's descrbed as Diablo+Super Heroes.

EDIT: Anyway, thanks for the help!

Heres a daft one to try that sometimes works with games from that time.

Create a folder on your hard disc something like HeroXDisc

Then copy the entire contents of the disc into that folder and try running the setup file from the folder you created.

Another thing that works occasionally (Blood 2 for example) is copying the entire contents of the disc again into a Hard Drive folder and look to see if there is the games startup exe file there and try running it without doing an installation. Like I have just said my disc copy of Blood 2 wont install on my system so I just done this and ran the exe file and it started up with no issues. Definately worth a shot.
iainmet, I'm trying it now. Will see if it works.

EDIT: No luck. Install locked up, and no launcher in the files. Plus, digging around revealed a patch that has to be installed seperately from the game.

I'm think i'm just gonna set this one aside and go back to skyrim.

Still, I appreciate the help.

Sorry if this may be dumb, but I have zero experience with Vista/7 (still on XP :-P ). A few years ago, when installing the Thief games or System Shock 2 in Windows XP was more problematic than it is now (thanks to all the modders support since then), I learned about a command that could solve a problem related to the instalation stalling at certain times: -lgntforce

I guess it's worth a try: launch the setup.exe (or whatever it's called) from the cmd line (there's still one in Vista/7, right?) after adding -lgntforce at the end. I.e.:

D:\setup.exe -lgntforce (replace D with your DVD-drive)

Finalguard: Now this is wierd. The publisher(Infogrames) is out of business...
Just an fyi: Infogrames is very much still in business, but they changed their name to Atari some years ago. ;)
Hey, I have Hero X!

The game didn't like Windows XP much, if memory serves. Unfortunately, I don't have Windows 7 to help you.

Really? Sounds like this game was intended for OH DEAR GOD WINDOWS ME!

This may be a lost cause, in that case. It may have been meant to be released much earlier, seeing how it's compatible with 98...

Just pulled out my copy and it does in fact list XP as a supported OS. I don't remember it working well on my XP comp though, I had to play it on my desktop with Win98SE.

*shrug*

I'm going to look through the manual, maybe it says something.

EDIT: Well the manual was rubbish, I'm afraid. There's no troubleshooting section I could find, in fact this is pretty much all it had to say about installation:

-----

Installing the Game
Inserting the CD may automatically prompt you to install the game. If your game does not automatically start the installation procedure then you can manually start the installation by double-clicking on the installer program in your Windows Explorer display. This program will be located on your CD-ROM drive. This game uses a standard Windows SETUP program. Whether or not your game automatically installs, remember these points:

Before installing any sizable game, it is a very good idea to run ScanDisk to check the hard drive for errors and Disk Defragmenter to organize it so that the game receives the best starting environment. These are Microsoft Windows utility programs. Help for these programs can be found in the Help tab of the Start Menu.
Be sure other programs are not running while the setup is active.

If your game does not automatically install then follow these instructions for manual installation.

1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
2. Find the CD-ROM drive letter and double-click on it (the letter of your CD-ROM is usually D: and/or indicated by a CD-ROM icon).
3. Run the installation.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

-----

So, I went ahead and installed the game for the hell of it. That added links for Infogrames North America and Infogrames Support, neither work any more of course. There was also a Hero X Help link, but that just opens the manual.

Tried running the game, loads up fine, I can go through character creation no problem, but once the actual game starts there are all kind of glitches, it's pretty much unplayable (text won't display, can't interact with environment, etc.). I might give it a try on my old Win98 comp later, I remember playing the game just fine on it way back.

Sorry I can't help you.

I'm not sure if this is possible but can you change compatibility mode on the installer? If you can, change it to Win98 and then run it in admin mode. I have never tried this myself for any game but perhaps if the installer thinks your current OS is Win98 the installer won't stop.

A long shot but possible, try the game via DosBox or running Win98 in a virtual environment (like VM virtualbox).

My comp-fu isn't good enough for those solutions, Nirth, and compatibility mode has never worked for me before.

Besides, from what I've seen of the game, it doesn't even seem to be worth the trouble.
