An online buddy of mine over at the Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures forum has asked for help with finding out the name of two old CRPGs he once played, but so far noone was able to help him. Since this community is a lot bigger than the one over there and usually quite good at identifying the most obscure games, I thought I'd give it a shot and offered to post his description here, too.

Here's what he wrote:
"I remember playing a CRPG on my old 286 PC back somewhere between 1991 and 1992. It had turn-based combat, like the Gold-Box games, but the icons were all one color. I recently saw pictures of a game called "Shards of Spring," and the combat engine looked similar to what I remember, but I played the game and it is definitely not the one I'm looking for.

I remember that you had a party of adventurers, you traveled a lot outdoors (as I can also remember that mountains were a pain), and that font was sort of a fancy medieval style. The game might have been shareware, as I downloaded it from a local BBS.

I have never been able to find this game again. I haven't got a clue what it's called, but I thought maybe someone on these boards might have played it (being as there are a lot of CRPG fans here). If anyone knows of a game that might fit these descriptions, let me know.

I wish I had more information. I don't have the game name or the company that put it out. It seemed as though the name might have started with an "S" (or a "D", lol). But, I'm sure that's no help. I played it between 1991-1992, but it could have been made at any point before that. The game might be really obscure. I've been searching for it for a few years now, and can't seem to locate it.

Also, I played another game I found at some point in the 1990s that was a direct rip-off of the Gold-Box games (the author even used some of the artwork). It was definitely shareware. The combat system and everything was reminiscent of FRUA [Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures] in a lot of ways. If anyone knows what that game is, let me know too."
. Others have already suggested the following:

Dark Designs I - Grelminars Staff:
"Nope. Nice try though. And it's pretty close. I remember the names of the characters being on the right side of the screen. And, as I mentioned, I think it may have been shareware, and not a commercial game (though I am not 100% sure)."
Demon's Winter:
"No. The font looks right, but the way the game is set up is completely wrong. Also, you don't start outdoors in a town (at least, not in the version I tested). And, the cleric doesn't have the right icon graphic either (I remember the cleric holding up a big cross or something similar).
Any help is much appreciated! :)

No, sorry, that's not nearly obscure enough. I'm pretty sure he knows all of the popular CRPG series. He once posted this list of CRPGs he played in another thread, maybe that could help as a reference of which games we can exclude. Like he wrote it's very probable that it was a shareware title or something.

But thanks for trying! :)

Did he checked mobygames? The filters can be very helpful. Unfortunately you can only check one year. :

For the first one, I think it could be Wizard's Crown: http://www.mobygames.com/game/wizards-crown

The most obscure RPG I ever played was: Superhero League of Hoboken

But this does not match the description :)
How about Heimdall, it was released on the Amiga and believe also the early PC's :

There was also Hillsfar (One of my all time favourite games) :

The CRPG Addict compilled this list of RPGs to play all of them in order: Master Game List. Maybe your friend can take a look at it, see if any title rings a bell.
Probably wont help but two old games I played that are a bit obscure is deathlord and eternal dagger.

Deathlord is an Asian theme while Eternal dagger is a sequel. Both are from the late 80's.

Are there any more details? How many characters do you get? Type of monsters/classes/spells?
Looked through all those links and still came up empty. But, I did end up with a couple of clues that might help.

The layout of the screen was very similar to "Exodus: Ultima III," except that you could have more party members (6 or 8, I think). The names were off to the side in boxes, but the font was very stylized. The game was top-down, for sure, and the combat screen was somewhat similar to games like "Demon's Winter" or "Shard of Spring," but the color scheme was more like " The Kingdom of Syree."

Really confusing, I know. And, before anyone asks, I'm not confusing these games; because I never played any of the games I have named above until recently when I started looking for this game. I really wish I could remember the name of it.
Have you looked through this on Moby Games :
