Let's say I can afford only one of the recent RPG's that came out. Which sould I get? The choice is between Neverwinter Nights Diamond, Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale II, Planescape: Torment, and Temple of Elemental Evil. Which would you choose? Of the choices, the only one I've have played Planescape, but I was very young and didn't appreciate it for what it was. I'm just in the mood for a great RPG that will take forever to finish.

Thanks.

Story driven RPG or combat driven? If story driven then Planescape.....if Combat driven then Neverwinter Nights......if you want both some combat and some story get Icewind Dale.

Wow, that is a tough one. Most logical choice would likely be Baldur's Gate II now that it is released, but if you are anything like me, once you play a sequel, the original somehow loses it's appeal due to dated graphics, and sometimes different controls, gameplay, menus, ect. Personally I would go with Baldur's Gate or Planescape Torment. Both are were two of the first made with the engine, and considered by many to be two of the best. Neverwinter Nights is also a good choice, but the newer graphics may make it harder to go back to something like Icewind Dale or Baldur's.
Thanks for the suggestion, guys. I appreciate the input. I do like the idea of a mix of both combat and story driven RPGs. How does Icewind Dale stack up against Baldur's Gate?

It's a bit shorter and simpler, but pretty fun overall and a bit better paced I think. It's also a bit more linear in the main quests and stuff but the story is great. Definately a must play for RPG fans and new users in the genre.
In terms of bang-for-the-buck, I'd recommend either Baldur's Gate 2 (huge game, good combination of story and combat) or Neverwinter Nights (mostly because of the large number of community-made modules available for download).

The stack up well, both have good stories, but Baldur's Gate edges out Icewind Dale for the most part. Icewind Dale seems more "hack n' slash" that Baldur's, but at the end of the day, it is just opinions, you will likely have to just flip a coin and go for it. I may say Baldur's blows Icewind out of the water (which I am not saying...) and the next guy may come and say "Icewind was better", it's just personal preference, both are great RPG's, and you may just have to find some reviews to help you choose which route to go, or you can flip the coin, that tends to work as well...LOL
I would get Neverwinter Nights or Baldur's Gate 2. What ruleset you choose could be the deciding factor.
I'd go with Baldur's Gate first. By the time you've finished you can move on to BGII. It's like having the appetizer before the main course.

Mmmmmmm....appetizers.....
While I have been looking at buying Neverwinter Nights for a while now (checking game stores for a copy of Diamond for 6 months), I think I will go for Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale for my first of these RPGs. The hack 'n' slash genre is always appealing (recently got Diablo 2 after enjoying Torchlight for months). But it would be nice if the characters were more interesting. So Baldur's Gate, then? I do plan to get all of the games I listed eventually (except maybe Temple? It was the only one I hadn't heard of before listed on GOG), but I need a starting point.

Thanks again for all of the advice, guys.

Except you simply MUST play BG1 using the BG2 engine, especially if you're going to get BG2 as well. I really suggest you get those 2 together and insert BG1 into BG2. Therefore if you can only afford one game right now, I'd suggest Planescape: Torment if you're in the mood for a good story, or Icewind Dale if you're more in the mood to fight.

I didn't know one could do such a thing. That certainly sounds like the way to go. Once I finish Realms of Arkania 1 & 2 (these bundled games are actually pretty good value for money), I'm heading into BG-land.
