Hey all -
Need to replace the fan on my HIS Radeon 4870. Not able to find an exact replacement part. Anyone knowledgeable with video cards think its OK to use any fan that fits or is the card sending the fan signals only an exact replacement would recognize.
Thanks,
Lou
PS - Already replaced it with a Sapphire 5670 so no need to say replace it. Just want to test it and make sure it still works in another box. Thanks.

Any fan will work. I've used wire ties and case fans before.

The safest bet is to get a VGA Cooler replacement with compatibility for your card. You can usually find replacement coolers with fans or without (passive cooling). If your chosen cooling solution includes a fan, you can be sure that the fan's power requirements are compatible with your video card jack.
If you were to try an alternative approach like a case fan or other type, I would considering wiring it to a free power jack on your power supply (not video card jack) to avoid possible damage to card and ensure proper cooling. Under this config, the fan would basically run at max until power is shut off.

Well if thats the case, a fancy cooler like this might be overkill but could be good if you plan to still use it or sell it
Well I thought the only good thing to come from the GOG closure was not having to select the winning post in answer to my question. Thanks - to all and Kudos to Hampster.
