Hello everyone

Today I've had a conversation with my friend about GoG.com and explained to him why I like buying good old games from here and why I enjoy being here

however he put out the old "lol i can just download these games from a torrent" card

to which I replied him with the reasons why I buy from here, one of those being gog.com provides compatibility with modern OS'es, especially windows 7

So he said to me: "lol I will download any game and run it on win7, just try me"

So my question to you is: What are the worst compatible games here on gog that are close to impossible to get running on vista and 7?

I know that Master of Magic is one of them but I would like to hear some of your suggestions so that I can prove my point to him
Outcast?
Sacrifice is basically FUBAR on Nvidia / W7 setups right now.

Messiah also has major graphical problems. It's possible to overcome them with a 3DFX patch and 3DFX emulation, but even then you're getting asked for the disc you don't have all the time.

I've heard some things about Interstate 76 too. I haven't tried it myself though.

Oh and just to be clear about this: these games are currently FUBAR on GOG too.

Well, GOG doesn't have those games but dare him to run "Amber: Journeys Beyond" and "Dark Side of the Moon". Simply it's impossible. No one found any way to play those on even XP and I'm not even talking about Vista/7. That will wipe a smirk off his face;-)
None, I guess. Virtualization is your friend. :p

Just FYI, somebody did finally make an XP/Vista patch for AMBER: Journeys Beyond. It now runs fine on my XP machine.

Well, that's an unexpected info. I played Amber on a virtual machine then got stuck and dropped it. Plus I didn't find it all that interesting. However the fact that the supposedly unrunnable on XP game has been patched, calls for some kind of celebration.

AFAIK, GOG hasn't gotten any games to run that haven't been able to be run before on Windows 7. What they have done is:

1. Provide a place to aquire the game legally.
2. Patched the games and verified they work (Although sometimes there are still issues).
3. Put the games in an installer. (Some older games the installer doesn't work so you either have to run the installer on a 32bit OS or unpack the files manually).

The amount of games that work fine on Windows 7 far outnumber the ones that don't and the ones that don't work fine on Windows 7 usually have the same issues with the earlier NT based OS's as well. The biggest differences compatibility wise for windows 7 are:

1. Graphics drivers dropping support.
2. WDDM vs XPDM (WDDM Causes issues with some games so you have to revert drivers)
3. No 16bit support for 64bit (First cropped up way back when XP\2003 64bit came out)
4. Palette issue with 8bit color games.
5. EAX (Vista+)
6. D3D Retained mode (missing since Vista?) Can be fixed by copying over the .dll

Thy MYST series games. So far, I got all games I purchased from GOG running, but the MYST games crash, freeze and several other things don't work in the games.
