Are you sure its from the hard drive? Have you dusted the inside of your computer lately, because if not, that might be the source of the noise.

It's the hard drive. I set it out on a different surface from the computer and it still made the same noise. I'm sending it back for a replacement tomorrow.

Having grown up with computers that made lots and lots of 'disk access' noises (and in turn became quite famous for them), I often forget to take a click or warble as a sign of immediate need for replacement. Smoke is usually the first thing to grab my attention.
MiniTool's Partition Wizard can get you set up with everything, from formatting, copying, wiping, and all from an easy to use Windows interface. Of course, during copy operations that require the primary HDD to be disengaged, it will reboot your PC into a UNIX-type interface. And it's free! There are 'Professional' editions, but the only thing they offer over the free version is support for 'legacy' versions of Windows (if you use XP, you're fine, but anything older than that, like Windows 2000, needs the Pro version), and you get access to phone support. You still have to pay for phone support, but you don't get access to it with the free version. And for some reason, the free version can't use the 'Merge Partitions' function, which is probably something you really don't need to be doing anyway.

Back in the day I had a HDD that sounded like a fucking toilet flushing every time something was written or read from it. I grew used to it. Nowadays; back it up, wipe it, and take it back.
