I was wondering if anyone has played the game Grotesque Tactics? The first or the second, I am thinking about maybe trying the first but was wondering the community's impression of these games.

I've played the first one, and I thought it was alright. It suffers from being a very simple game, and it does not have a great deal of tactical depth (think Final fantasy tactics advance minus the grind), but the humor was so cheesy & stupid that it became funny.
Thanks for the reply, i am kinda on the fence but now after reading metacritic and your post I might wait.
It's not great. There are much better TBS games out there, and the parody elements aren't all that amusing. I don't regret paying $2.50 for it, but I probably wouldn't have paid much more.
Tactical RPGs like FFT or Fire Emblem are one of my favourite genre, yet Grotesque Tactics failed to hook me.
It has few tactical options and it tries way too hard to be funny, so I gave up on it halfway through. I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone.

I haven't played the sequel, but unless they've made major improvements, especially to their writing, I don't think it's worth the price they're asking right now.

Pardon my necro, but I just heard about this game & was wondering...

a) Where can I get it for $2.50?
b) Was that the English version of the game?
It was probably on sale when he bought it.

Sales. It will probably be on future sales as well. And yes, there is an English version. Though the game is not good enough to prioritize, there are fare better games like that out there.
I've only played the first game. It is, without a doubt, the easiest TBS game that I have ever played. The upgrade paths and inventory are extremely linear and focused, and positioning/class management is pretty simple. There is some sarcastic humor, but by the end of the game it starts to grate. The battle system is competent enough (minus a sometimes-sketchy camera, though there was apparently a patch to fix it), so I would think that some gamers out there who don't normally take in TBS could get some enjoyment from it. If you are a genre stalwart, however, you are better off looking elsewhere.

It was a sale on Steam, and yes it was the English version. I'm sure it'll go on sale either there or on GamersGate again sometime.
Thanks for the info, everyone.

What I liked about what I recently saw was that it uses turn-based combat on a grid (old-school) with nice modern graphics, and that there are individual characters rather than units. The fact that it seems to aim for funny & uses some tactics is just a nice added bonus.

So if there's something else that fits the description of what I'm looking for, please tell me. :-)

The game type that Grotesque tactics emulates is not super common on PCs, but still a relatively common occurrance on consoles, with games such as Fire Emblem, Disgea and so on still being made in decent enough quantities.

And here are some that are not exact fits, which should be enjoyable to anyone enjoying that particular game type:
Jagged Alliance Back in Action, UFO: After**** series, Battle for Wesnoth, Future Wars, Galactic Assault: Prisoner of Power.
