Is it possible to replace the fan on a graphics card? I have a GeForce 8400 GS, and the fan doesn't want to work anymore. I'm just wondering if I can replace the fan or if I'd have to get a whole new card. Thanks.

FIrst I am a fan of good GPUs too.

Second does the fan/heatsink connect in some undoable way? If so you can undo it...possibly locate a new one on ebay or the like, and replace it. THe newer GPUs have fan/heatsinks that screw onto the card. Older ones and those with passive cooling sometimes used thermal ADHESIVE instead of thermal paste to attach it to the GPU.

Quick google search, really why do people post to forums but not search google...shows the fan is anywhere from $6 to $19 and Geforce forums...again a better choice than GOG for help says yes, you can change the fans...

By the way I did google search for Geforce 8400 GS fan replacement.

Because I like having "interaction" rather than just passively looking. Do a search = get a million contradictory statements.

And here on GOG, I can give points by marking a post as the solution. I suppose I should do that now...
My son's Geforce 480 ?? I think or 460...was crashing , throwing up artifacts and rebooting his windows. We took the fan off, scraped off the old dry thermal paste, put on a THIN layer of high quality paste, and reattached the fan. It works good as new now. I am glad to be able to show my son these types of things. We discussed how the thermal paste fills in gaps so small that you can not see them that would allow pockets of air to heat up the GPU, and generally had that interaction you are talking about.

Although in his case he wants his card to die so he can buy a newer Radeon card, because the Radeons seems to mine cryptocurrency faster and he recently started that as well.

Last time I checked you couldn't actually mine quickly enough anymore to even make up for the electricity costs.

At $6 to $19 it's not too bad to replace the heatsink. Sometimes it's just more feasible to upgrade depending on the cost. You might want to look into what cards it's comparable to today. If a superior card is around $50, that would be a better purchase.
