Anyone know if there's a chance that a Gothic II-related sale might happen at some point in the near future?
Not a chance, seeing as we just had a sale on the Nordic Games catalogue. Sorry, but you seem to have missed out there. But not by much in my opinion as I don't like the game.

I'd like to hear another opinion (I've heard nothing but good about it), so what don't you like about it?

And after GoG GamersGate had a Nordic sale too.

Now don't get me wrong. I want to keep this in context. I love open world RPGs. I've got nothing against playing games of that era. My ludicrous number of hours invested in Morrowind would attest to both counts. But whereas Morrowind's combat was more than a bit dodgy, Gothic 2's is probably the worst since that 90s beat em up I played as a kid where the blows rarely ever connected, regardless of how it actually appears.

Also there's the movement. Tomb Raider might have got a lot of comparatively advanced stuff right about six years beforehand, but that didn't stop PB from buggering up even basic movement.

So yeah, there might be a great world to explore in Gothic 2. But the game makes you feel like you're doing so in a wheelchair. With a wonky wheel. That squeaks.

It's also worth pointing out that I love Risen, also created by PB. Which is why I was dismayed to learn they re-acquired the Gothic license. With Risen they really upped their game, so to speak. Now they've got Gothic back again I'm already predicting another rushed buggy mess that will play like an early alpha version of something that one day might have become a good game one day, if it was ever finished.

Yeah, really bad timing. Especially considering that was probably the best discount I've seen on GOG for that number of games.

Just because PB got the Gothic license back doesn't mean that they will use the same development ethic, or indeed even use the license at all. I remember reading an interview with one of the main PB guys (Michael Hoge, I think), that he was bored with fantasy and wanted a completely different setting after Risen 2. He mentioned that he was impressed with Fallout 3, so they may go in that direction, or something else entirely, with a new franchise.

Now that would certainly be interesting. I know a lot of people here hated it, but I really liked Fallout 3 (I like Fallout NV too, but in different ways). I liked the exploration. The writing was poor, but the capital wasteland was a joy to explore.

So something along those lines from a studio that knows their stuff and can get the funding to really make a go of it could make for something really interesting. In a way, they could use the Gothic name for that series (think 40K). But naturally that would only piss a lot of fans off, just like the recent Syndicate and XCOM games. So perhaps it's best they don't.
