Hi, just purchased and downloaded Gothic 3, but when trying to launch the game I just get at floating square on a black background with the message "Not optimum mode - recommended mode: 1080x1024 60hz" (which is the mode I'm using). My videocard is ATI Radeon HD 4800-series. The music comes through just fine. Any suggestions?

I've had similar symptoms when I've had hz problems, maybe try forcing 60hz from dxdiag and set your desktop resolution to 1280x1024?

My desktop resolution is already at 1280x1024. How do I "force 60Hz from dxdiag"?

Have you tried to look / post on Gothic subforum?

Which operating system do you have?
If older versions of Windows then:
Go to Start -> run, type -> dxdiag
and have a look there under one of the tabs, should say something equivalent to forcing refresh rate.

If Windows 7 then look here:

Thanks for the suggestion, it seems my settings are already at 1280x1024 - 60Hz.

As a last ditch effort from me then: go to your Gothic 3 directory:
Gothic 3/Ini/
open ge3.ini
and play around with the resolution values (change them to your native desktop resolution).

Also, try putting:
Fullscreen=false
and see if it runs.

***MAKE A BACKUP*** of your .ini file before you play with it.

You can also check the video card control panel and see if there is a 'scaling' option - this stretches the output to full screen.

Hi there, managed to solve the problem by setting the "3D Refresh Rate Override"-option in my video card control panel at "Same as desktop". Thanks for the suggestions.
