hobblinharry: MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries ... requires BitTorrent to download and requires a special installer (also found at the website) to install the game.
Just to clarify, their installer handles the initial torrent downloads as well; you don't need a separate client.

For those that prefer to use their own BitTorrent client there is also a standalone MTX Extractor that lets you bypass their horrible client altogether.
3000AD has made a number of their titles free now.

PaakType: Seven posts without a mention of The Ur-Quan Masters (formerly Star Control 2)? Unacceptable.
I was very *frumple* until you rectified this.

RatherDashing: Daggerfall has always been something that works sometimes, doesn't others. It's too bad, because it's one of the best CRPGs ever made, but on my PC the game is incredibly temperamental.
One can only hope that DaggerXL is finished someday.

Edit: I said DarkXL by accident at first... I want that too!

fisk0: Warzone 2100. Not a perfect RTS by any means, but it has a lot of very interesting ideas, rather unique gameplay - somewhat similar to Total Annihilation when it comes to resource management and focus on long distance artillery capable of striking anywhere on the map, and customizable/modular units and a ridiculously huge tech tree that I actually think is more extensive than in any of the Civilization games.
Since the source code was liberated in 2004, and all the assets in 2008, it's still in active open source development, and had a new release just a week ago.
Hmm, spent a LOT of time playing this game. The idea of the, uhh, commander units (can't remember if that's what Warzone calls them) is really cool, and it's also an interesting twist to have dedicated artillery spotters that gain experience from the arty they support. Oh, and a nice campaign game, too, with persistent units and experience. The tech tree is very deep, as you say, and provides several different means to whupping the enemies.

I'll agree with you and highly recommend this title for fans of RTS. It's not the prettiest game around but the gameplay is quite good, IMO.

Yeah, the campaign is rather unique, and the commander units are an interesting concept, basically working as a control group even though the game already has the traditional RTS control group setup - but the commander units can be a lot more automated - I love how they can take over factory production and use artillery support.

The only things I somewhat dislike in the game is the bad mouse and camera controls, something that is true for almost all the 3D RTSes, but especially the mouse issues are particulary noticeable in Warzone 2100 I think.
That the game really only has one faction is a bit boring too, even though the extensive tech tree means that there will be a bit of variation between players in a multiplayer game anyway.
It might be worth adding also Liberated Games link to the list
http://www.liberatedgames.com/

Although for some of the games there is only source code
I'm glad somebody put up these lists, I'm sick of constantly re-entering links for friends. :)

Wouldn't it be great to have all of these older, freeware games available through GOG though? I don't want to sound too stupid, but mounting the .iso files for command and conquer is a pain, the mtx downloader has lots of issues when you want to download Mechwarrior 4, and seeing as games like jagged alliance are packaged with their DOS emulators, the old Elder Scrolls could be hosted here too. Heck, even Aleph One for mathron could work, the games could install and be set up "just right" with all the maps and such out of the starting gate.

Obviously, if they are free elsewhere they should be free here, but from an ease of use and content quality perspective, we all could benefit from their hosting it here right? And from a PR standpoint GOG would definitely look good in the eyes of users, new and old, by helping the consumer use their games, and it'll generate "brand loyalty" and word of mouth faster that you can say "OMG! DRM-free games!?!?"

(I don't want to look like I'm piggyback posting since somebody said something similar, I just didn't want to create a seperate thread and get yelled at either! So if I did, I apologize.)

edit: I really believe we could use all the agrregate lists and come up with a list of all the games and files that work, and then use our "uber-list" and use that to submit befor GOG and hope they do something with it. Their hosting would be a drain on thier servers and cash flow I'm sure, but we'd all stand to benefit I think. Who's up for it?
