Well, Dr_Adder. Even though nobody was really interested, I went ahead and setup a TW server for us anyway.. haha :-)

Everyone is welcome to come play. I only bought a 4 node server (4 players at a time) but I will buy more nodes if people express an interest.

These first games will be for practice, then maybe I will build a tournament game on December 1st for a free game for the winner.

I have 3 games.

750 Turns for non scripters to be able to compete

2000 Turns

Unlimited Turns.

To play, just telnet to:

telnet etwar.dyndns.org 2002

XP, Vista and Win 7 have built in telnet. It is not installed by default on Vista and 7, so you have to install "optional components" and select "telnet client"

There is a very cool telnet client helper that I use called swath:

www.swath.net

There is also all kinds of info and other free servers (no need to just use mine). Just do a google or wikipedia for TradeWars 2002.

I am designing several new races and ships to include in a new game or a reset.

Enjoy!!

Feel free to post any questions and I will try to answer them (although I am not pro at this game, I just like it)

I used to love playing that game. I've never started on day one of a server before. That would be sweet. Sadly, I'm pretty short on skills and cash. So I have little to offer you in your quest. Sorry. I can chip in 5 dollars... If anything we could build our own GOG corp on someone else's server. :D

Actually, I just checked it out and the server software is pretty cheap. I also have an old computer I can use as a server (it does not take much power). I may try to set one up, but I would need help on the management side as my time is limited.

Creating a corp on someone else’s server is also a good idea..

In light of all of the free games being given away that people pick up so fast, maybe we can give away free games to the winners of the game? That could be fun. I can setup a website with leader boards, etc.

From preliminary research, it seems like it might be good to have 3 games.

300 turns for people limited on time.

2000 for people with a nice chunk of time to play.

Unlimited for scripters, etc.

If we get at least 6-8 people interested in playing, I will try to set up a server. If it fails miserably, then it may be time to make a GOG Corp (or we can have both). lol :-)

Anyone else interested in playing?

It is sort of a space trade sim. You start in a basic ship, then trade goods to make cash. You can upgrade your ships, create and colonize planets, create corporations with other traders. Then ultimately, destroy everyone else if you wish. :-) There are lots of different strategies you can use for all different aspects of the game. It is real time multiplayer, and I think it is a TON of fun. There is Chat, secure chat, email, etc. built into the game, so it is a fun way to communicate to with other GOG community members.

Check it out, it is free, and there is no sign up!! :-)

Damuna: So, what do you do in this game?
Check it out at:

telnet etwar.dyndns.org 2002

We can at least practice here before we play on a Veteran server. I get killed in those games... haha :-)

Never played this before but I'm going to check it out.
It also has elements of Star Trek for those who are interested in playing a Star Trek type game. It's great fun. Thanks for doing this drhoads!

No Problem. Thanks for playing!! I hope we can get a few more people interested. It is pretty old, but I think a lot of people here like good old games. lol...

Just so neither of us, or Gator Man (thanks for checking it out) think we are crazy, Trade Wars did make a Top 10 PC games of all time list. :-)

If we can't get enough people here to play, I found a good server with about 10 players ICE9. We could play there and corp up. I did not advertise my server on the trade wars board yet, because I figured anyone here would need a safe place to check it out (including myself.. lol) before getting destroyed by a veteran player.. :-)

I will definitely play. I'm sure someone else on here has played this game. It may just be an issue of timing.
Dr Hoads it appears that your TW server is down. Maybe this is on purpose maybe not. I will say I have liked what I have seen so far. Anyway just a heads up.
Here's another TW server that will be up and running for quite a while. It also has a number of other door games on it as well.
