Indie games are gaining in popularity. Problem is that there is no unified distributor. Lucky ones land on steam and see good sales. But its not easy to solve legalese with Steam.

Why does GOG does not recognize the opportunity and take over ?

Good Indie Games - GIG.com

Sell Minecraft , Frayed Knights ... just some that couldnt get steam deal , but are successful nevertheless !

Go GIG !

There are some sites that already do that, check out Indievania for example. :)

Nevertheless, I agree with you. I trust and like the GOG team, so I would rather buy indie games from them than from anywhere else.
New sites are emerging based on that idea, like Indievania, for example.
There are some great indie games, I wouldn't mind if GOG starts selling them.

edit. oops, I didn't read yettenet post.

Take a look at Desura, It's basically Steam for indie games and mods.

I know there are indie dedicated distribution platforms. Like Desura.

But the reputation is what counts.

People use Steam , because they trust them and used them before.

Same goes for GOG

Not only that GOG would attract vastly larger audience to indy games. But both GOG and indie developers would profit.

Instead now indies have only either Desura , that is known only in indie circles. Or Steam that is cumbersome to use for small games.

Indeed GIG would be win win for both developers, users and GOG
Indie games are already cheap, digitally distributed, have no or only light DRM and work on modern PCs, so I don't really see the point.

Point is having unified distribution platform.

You can not believe how much difference in revenue has a indie title launched on steam, versus title launched any other way (including desura)

Today its almost : you launch on steam and you make it big , or you launch elsewhere and you get scraps

And i telling you this as indie developer.
I suggested exactly this a long time ago. gig.com is still in use, but doesn't look like it's exactly a multi-million dollar enterprise so it would probably be possible to buy the domain off them.

The problem would be in getting GOG interested in the idea.
