I see not a lot of people here have read the Zombie Survival Guide. Not good.
Chainsaws are among the worst mêlée weapons you can use for zombie-hunting: they jam, they're loud, they run on fuel, they're heavy and above all they're messy. You do NOT want to be sprayed with zombie gore - the smallest piece of organic matter will kill you if it gets past skin level.
Instead, aim for something small, sturdy and practical. A crowbar is the most readily available object that fits these criteria, and also one of the best; however, if you can find something akin to a Shaolin spade, consider bringing it instead unless you're going to be moving in tight quarters.
If circumstances dictate that you can do without a weapon doubling as a tool, your two prime choices are either an AUTHENTIC katana or a WWI trench spike. Unfortunately, neither is easy to procure, and so your best choice for a dedicated mêlée weapon is probably a machete - especially since it can be used for non-combat purposes as well.
It's been a while since I read the ZSG, so it's a good thing this topic was brought up to remind me of the fact. When the zombie apocalypse comes, you can't be prepared enough.
Bumping for new users/everyone. If you are seeking advice, here is the place.
Another attempt..
