Best Game of 1996.--Gamest magazine, Japan

Street Fighter Alpha 2, one of the most successful 2D fighting games ever, is available 60% off on GOG.com. That's only $2.39 for the next 24 hours!

Street Fighter Alpha 2 features many iconic Street Fighter characters like Chun-Li, Ryu, and Zangief, as well as some new challengers from the Final Fight series. For the first time in history, Sagat can face Sodom and Ken can beat the living hell out of Guy. Or maybe the other way around? All eighteen hardcore contestants are in their peek fighting shape, so just about anything can happen! Prove yourself in eight subsequent matches, discover your secret rival, and face your ultimate opponent. Let the tournament begin!

In 1996 Street Fighter Alpha 2 graced our screens as one of the last 2D fighting games with classic graphics. With the astounding animated backgrounds, and perfect character design, this game is a monumental achievement in pixel art. If not for anything else, the aesthetics alone make it an obligatory addition to any fighting game fan collection. Apart from the looks, it brings some fresh ideas to the table, replacing the Chain Combo mechanics with free-form Custom Combos, and introducing separate Alpha Counters for punch and kick attacks.

Kick hard, punch fast, and launch devastating combos in Street Fighter Alpha 2, for only $2.39 on GOG.com! The offer will last until Tuesday, February 5, at 10:59AM GMT.

With this, we're kicking off with our new GOG Gem Promo schedule. From now on, you'll get two of them every week: a classic title will be discounted each Monday, while Wednesday will give you a discount on one of our newer titles. This way, both indie and retro fans get a Gem each week!

roelibex: Thanks, now i will shift my focus on the mondays instead of the wednesdays: im here for the good old games not the mediocre new games. A lot of past wednesdays "gems" where newer titles, which i dont really care about (whats "gemmie" about them?)
Well, that's the whole point of having two separate Gem promos each week. That way we can cater to all of our audience. :-)

Still, I would really recommend that you gave a shot to some of the new and indie titles. Like the ones that Lord Vi--eh, I mean adamzs suggested. It's not like the art of making good games died in 2006. ;-)

adamzs: The Witcher 2, Legend of Grimrock, Primordia, Neverwinter Nights 2, Inquisitor...

Yeah, I think you were talking out of line there.
Please, since when is having a opinion out of line?

-WItcher 2: didnt enjoy this as much as part 1, i thought it had a bad case of consolitus.
-Legend of grimrock: very good game, based on good old game mechanics (see what i did there)
-Primordia: dont like adventures, it looks and probably plays very old schooly
-NWN2: 2006; i consider this an old game
-Inquisitor: bad game indeed, combat/animation are so horrendous i could not play this for an hour.

As i said earlier im here for old games, nostalgia you know. I can probably count newer titles i enjoy on 1 hand. If you think that is me talking out of line so be it.

G-Doc: Since some of our users prefer classics and some are here for the indies, we decided to split the Gem Promo formula in two. From now on, Monday will greet you with a classic Gem promo and the usual Wednesday promo will be reserved for newer games.
Oh no! You found a way to siphon money from my account twice as fast. And the worst part is that I won't notice because I'll be busy playing the games.

Quick! I must put a lock on my wallet and throw away the key! That will work, unless...
AAAARGH! Why did I have to memorize my credit card's info?

I have no desire to turn this into a flame war of any kind, but I would argue that opinions indeed can be out of line. If I walked up to a person on the street and told them "I think your face is ugly", I would be out of line. Similarly, if I say "new games on GOG are mediocre" I'm also out of line, because just like the poor stranger whose face I've just rated with critical words, many people who love these games will feel as if an injustice had ensued. But then again, that's just my opinion, anyway.

I too am here for the nostalgia and for what I missed "back in the day." I try to respect GOG's newer game decisions, but they just don't interest me.

I appreciate the two kinds of gem promos too.
