Due to the popularity of our Gem promos--and our ever-growing catalog!--we're making Gem promos every Wednesday now. More gems for everyone! Huzzay!

[url=http://www.gog.com/gamecard/darkstone]Darkstone, a classic hack-and-slash that introduced 3D graphics into the genre, will have you hacking through hordes of horrors with a 60% discount for the next 24 hours.

If your name is Lord Draak and you wield the power to transform yourself into a giant dragon, becoming an evil overlord seems like an obvious career choice. And when, by some strange and totally unexpected twist of fate, you end up deprived of your magic, banished from the realm, and nearly killed, you have no other option but to gather back your minions and devise a new evil plot to terrorize the land and rebuild your dark domain. Right? RIGHT?! Well, tough luck, Lord Draak--Darkstone isn’t about you. It’s about the valiant heroes that are coming to get you.

In Darkstone a party of up to four adventurers set off on a quest to free the realm of Uma of its oppressor. In the co-op multi-player mode each player controls one of them. In single-player you can switch between two characters and the computer will assume the role of the one you’re currently not handling. There are four provinces to explore, each with its own set of quest-filled, procedurally-generated dungeons to keep you busy and boost the game’s replay value.

13 years after its release, Darkstone remains one of the most memorable titles of the hack-and-slash genre! Start dungeon crawling now, for only $2.39 until Thursday, July 26 at 10:59 AM GMT.
Ok, I'm a sucker for RPGs... so I bit this one.

Now bring Titan Quest! :)

Barneyhamster85: Hi everyone,

Darkstone is a fantastic game but just be aware before you buy that if you're running an NVIDIA graphics card on a WIndows XP system, the game will run but with serious graphical errors resulting in the game being unplayable.

I paid "full-price" for the game at release, but as "full-price" only meant $5.99 I wasn't too bitter about it, but it should be noted somewhere that this game has serious compatibility issues with XP so that other paupers like myself who still run the old Windows version won't make the mistake that I did.

Otherwise, for those disappointed by Diablo 3, Darkstone may fill that click-hack-slash-loot hole in your soul!

tfishell: Have other people had the same problems as you?
I have two WinXP computers at home.
I'm playing the game on my ATI laptop, and it works flawlessly.

I tested it on my Nvidia PC to check if there are really any problems, and the game works great, but it sometimes locks up and stops reacting. After alt-tabbing everything goes back to normal and you can play on. But the first time I pressed escape button and the monitor turned itself off (!!!), and the PC completely locked up.
So be a bit weary, but do not fear, it's playable if you alt-tab.

Did you have the same problem, Barneyhamster85?

tburger: Not my cup of tea but the idea of having gem promo every Wednesday is definitely excellent...

Not sure if this applies to this game or not, but I run my games on an XP system with an Nvidia card as well. I have found that similar type problems like you are describing, that I have had with a few older games (AOWSM comes to mind as recent) were actually due to the multicore processor on my computer. Started launching these type of games and setting the core affinty to 1, and they ran like a charm. As I said though, don't have this game, but thought I'd throw my experience out there, just in case it might apply for some ppls.

Does Co-Op mean over the internet with friends? If so, how does that work out nowadays? If I can play this with four friends I may pick it up.

If it has LAN support (which it probably has) you can play it online with a friend via a tool such as Hamachi.

To clarify things I've re-downloaded the game and checked the Darkstone forum again. Looks like people who bought the Gem Promo are getting the same problem. The screen suffers from intense flickering on XP systems running NVIDIA graphics cards which renders the game totally unplayable.

The only fix that works for this issue is rolling back your drivers to ancient times...

Please note this isn't to do with multicore processors and is most definitely an issue for NVIDIA cards running XP.

Yep, that's pretty much me. I have a 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 and 2gb of ram, along with a GeForce 7600 GS and Windows XP Service Pack 3. Flickery as fuck. :P

Aargh, i paid full price, but in my opinion it is worth the asking price. Yes, Titan quest along with it's expansion is sorely needed here. Also i'd love to see last two expansions for King's Bounty. They have been on Steam for ages, it's time for them to arrive here.
Argh, just bought this some time ago as well.

No matter, it was not too expensive even then. I like it.
Instant buy.

Thanks GOG, keep up the excellent work
Could resist... aaarrgh damn you GoG :P

To get the game running on your PC you should roll back your NVIDIA drivers to 280.26. That's the latest version that can run the game it seems. So much for keeping our computers completely up to date eh!?

If you're not sure how to do this and are desperate to play some Darkstone, PM me and I'll walk you though it :-)

I'm afraid I already knew that hours before I even posted in the gem promo topic. Considering I've wasted a huge chunk of my life in the field of computers, I think I can at least roll back my drivers without a step by step walkthrough, to say the least. ;)

Now, what'd be better than people having to roll back their drivers just to play Darkstone, is if, you know, somebody fixed what's clearly broken?
