When I open the downloader it shows just what looks like an empty warning window (see image). I cannot close it and the program stays like that, without any functionality. Any idea?

Unfortunately the downloader has a lot of problems so I'd advise against using it. You can find info about it here as well with problems and some possible fixes.

Just do a browser download....or use a download manager and plug the links into it from the download window popup in your game shelf area. Either way will give good speeds in most cases.
