It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Just bought Baldur's Gate, and I'm given an option for a gog.com downloader that just keeps trying to connect repeatedly. Says application is offline, is there any way to make it work? I've downloaded games here before but don't remember having to use this downloader app.

You don't need to use it. Just download using your browser.

Strange, I don´t have any problem of that kind.
Possibly blocked by an installed firewall? If so, exclude it from the restriction rules.

I've found GOG's downloader to be iffy for me ... I use the browser. There have also been a couple of community-made downloaders that work. Here's one for Linux and here's one for multiplatform.

And again there is always the browser. :) Cheers!
