Don't worry, Alpha Centauri got me used to suffer humiliating defeats in any difficulty level above normal. But I'm getting better with all that practice.... ;)

The 1.12 AI is adequate, though you can exploit it relatively easy. 1.13 does fiddle a bit with the AI, but it's mostly the other options it adds that will result in your ass getting kicked. However, while you can jump straight into 1.13, I do find it best to play 1.12 first, so as to not be overwhelmed with all the choices 1.13 offers.

I will follow your advice then. And if I am against the wall, I have always Gamefaqs and their guides.
