AlKim: There are necromancy spells that allow you to raise temporary (sixty seconds, I think) fighters from corpses scattered around the battlefield - friend or foe alike, if memory serves. It's pretty cool to overwhelm enemies with a flood of warriors, then raise their sorry asses for reinforcements on your next attack.
It's indeed fun but time limitation is something that always bothered me, they are usually too weak as well. It's also much better when your summons, especially in combination of permanency, have abilities of their own like extra summons!

I can understand the time limit, because otherwise you would be able to turtle the inevitable waves of enemies until you can rush with the undead alone. SpellForce 2 seemed like a relatively fast-paced RTS to me as well (although I don't play RTS's very often, so take that with much salt), so I never found the short duration of raising the dead detrimental to my efforts. There was one map where I did rely on it for defending my base until resources for better units had been gathered, which I found pretty hectic and satisfying.

Stacking summons is just bullshit in my opinion, but whatever floats your boat, I guess.

sibberke: Heroes of Might and Magic: each game has a necromancer race and at least one campaign/a few missions where you play as one.
Yes, Heroes of Might & Magic as well as Master of Magic. MoM doesn't have a necromancer option per se, but if you choose Death magic at startup you can raise undead armies, cast death spells, etc.
Wasn't there a little indie game going around that had you playing as a vengeful necromancer? It was done in Tactical RPG style, and you were allowed to take your best/strongest units into each new battle. It was sort of like Wesnoth, I believe.
In Ultima 8: Pagan you become a necromancer quite early in the game.
Thanks for the replies all :) Awesome that I have most of the games you guys have mentioned (just haven't had time to play them yet >.<).! Ya, diablo 2 was fun (so was AoC, though don't want to play any MMOs x.x).

Ya, I'm in the mood to play a person with tons of minions (pref. undead) and just annihilate my enemies. Of course I always prefer games where it's army vs army essentially (find the 1 vs infinite enemies and surviving games to be a tad boring nowadays).
The Synergies Mod for Torchlight 2 adds Necromancers as a playable class, among many other additions to the game.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, a free roguelike with a tile set, has the perfect class for you: Death Knight.

The Death Knight can raise quite a few of the dead to serve him on a level and the more your god likes you, the more powerful your summons become and you can raise more of them at once :D

I remember taking over entire branches with my armies of the dead :D Even more fun is when you get a weapon that can raise the dead on kill :D

The Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age Origins(Though no summoning), Any of the D&D games.

Actually I should have continued my idea.

I rather have a limited number than time limited summons. Because then I'll have to make use of a small numer of units against a larger number units instead "rushing" before they disappear.

In SpellForce as I recall if you can have a summon it drains a part of your maximum mana but it's not limited to a time duration, only until you unsummon (I've a vague memory this was possible) or your enemy kills it.

Of course different rules should apply to different genres and I was talking mainly out of a typical RPG scenario as opposed to a strategy game where armies is a big part of the game.

Der Langrisser on the super nintendo has a few heroes that can become necromancers
Warlock - Master of the Arcane: Like the HoMM series you can play as the undead faction. I've found the game fun even if the AI/diplomacy in the game is quite weak compared to other games in the same genre.

Path of Exile: Diablo II-ish gameplay and a free to play game. If you focus on summoning you can get an army of spectres.
Might and Magic 7 - you can have a necromancer in the party if you go on the evil path. Might and Magic 8 you can have a necromancer ( upgraded to lich ) right from the start. In both games, the necromancers are devastating, if properly leveled and you will probably end up overusing them to clear entire maps and reducing the rest of the party as meat shields.

F1ach: I took a break and got some news letter, clicked on something (forget what) and suddenly I was fucking subbed again, asked for a refund, was told that they didn't do refunds, so I never went back, even when it went f2p I didn't bother.
Contact bank/paypal/credit card company/whatever > tell them to revoke the payment > give the MMO company the bird > Problem solved. :)

Was a couple of years ago mate, in the end, there was a gameshop here called Xtravision, they sold off all their AoC time cards for a fiver each, I bought them and sold them on ebay for a tenner each, so I was well reimbursed :)
