Kennethor: King of Dragon Pass here on GOG is kinda like that.
It has a very open and always interesting story. There is combat but it is only a small part of the gameplay.
It is quite simple graphically speaking but it has wonderful images and art.
Defending your territory/attacking others is a part of KoDP, though; it's not like in Papers, Please where you just click to fight (no thinking involved), or like in Long Live the Queen where you just follow the script (again, pretty mindless).

I am tired of thinking about that stuff, if that makes sense ^^

wolfsrain: Most of the western visual novels could fit your bill: quite a few on Desura, though the really great ones are the japanese ones ( expensive as hell and playable only with fan translations, as the japanese companies that are developing/publishing the genre do not bother with the western market)

Here are some western made visual novels, just like Long Live The Queen:

As for others, i think the best were posted already, though to be fair Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy doesn't fit your bill entirely. You will have some combat in the form of some QTE
Are there more novels which don't double as dating/romance sims? Solstice and Cinders look awesome, thanks!

Already played Anna and Myst series, fyi.

cmdr_flashheart: Blade Runner looks awesome. Always surprised to see when I've already voted for a game ^^

And both Fahrenheit (I think I've played this a bit before, I can't remember) and Post Mortem look interesting, thanks!

@amagarr: SoD looks cool as well, thanks. And it's on sale at Amazon!

Unless you wanna suffer thru a script on par with the storytelling you see in a porno-stay far away from Fahrenheit

The truth is that the story of Fahrenheit, especially at the end, is quite convoluted and unreal (although it may be a side effect of the kind of game it is), but the feeling of being in control of what you do is very good, at least at first run.
Because of that I like this game and I would love to play another game on PC of Quantic Dream developers.
But yes, in my opinion, from storytelling point, Shadow of destiny is a best game.

As that kind of games are also my favorites (adventures with multiple choices/multiple ends)
If you are interested, cmdr_flashheart, someday I want to play Walking dead, Memento mori
and The Last Express (this game especially because it is in real time, so of course, choices
are in real time).

Also there is a game with the same mechanical, from the creators of Shadow of destiny
on Nintendo Ds. It's name is Time Hollow.

So, also, I recommend you this games.
The last express, Maupiti island, Journeyman project 1-3, Quest for glory 1-5 (has some combat but nothing major since it's mainly an adventure game), BAT 1-2, I have no mouth and i must screem is sorta nonlinear, Bloodnet and i dunno, some other games as well i guess
