Wesker: I don't know if it was released outside of France, but there's also an adventure game set in the Forbidden City ("Chine : Intrigue dans la Cité interdite").

It had a 360-degree field of view, similar to Myst III, the graphics were rather nice for the time, the music was quite good, but it was quite (too) easy.

It came up with an in-game encyclopedia on ancient China and the life in the Forbidden City. Its content was probably quite accurate, since the game was co-edited by the national museums administration. Were you able to get an english copy of it, the existence of which I'm unaware, it might satisfy your curiosity on the subject.
Looks like it was released in english, here is a review . I myself bought the french version some times ago in an Cryo adventure game pack, but I have not played it yet, can't say of it is good. If it is like like most defunct Cryo games, it will be a visually very nice looking game, with a quite interesting plot, but very linear.
Well, as for adventure games, besides the already mentioned China -Intrigue in the Forbidden City and Heart of China, there's also The Legend of Lotus Spring and Ripley's Believe It or Not!: The Riddle of Master Lu. I haven't played any of these, so I can't quite comment on them.

As for RPG's, there's also Titan Quest, which basically has you battling mythic creatures in ancient Greece, Egypt, Babylon and China.

Also, I would recommend going to this linkon Mobygames.
I -knew- there was another one out there: Qin: Tomb of the Middle Kingdom. It's a 1995 adventure game set in 2010 (!) about excavating the tomb of China's first emperor. Therefore it's technically not set in ancient China, but is supposedly chock-full of Chinese history.

cpugeek13: Jade Empire is a great game. I've played and beaten it. But though inspired by it, it technically doesn't take place in ancient China. Its a fantasy kingdom with a Chinese aesthetic, just like Battle Realms is a fantasy "Japan."

I was kind of sad when I heard that the new Total War game was going to be set in Japan. Though Japan is cool and all (samurai! ninjas!) China has had much larger, greater conflicts in its history.

BTW, if anyone is into Asian war movies, check out Red Cliff. Its a fairly recent film by John Woo. If by the end of that movie you're not crying for a China: Total War, then you must be crazy.
So I assume you'd want in to be set during the three kingdoms period... You know, it being china and all there's a lot of history to choose from.

That show was rubbish. It distorted history and the original novel so much it was incredible.

Yeah, but its a great popcorn flick. If you are spending time dissecting every inaccuracy in it, then you are missing the point of it :-P
Can't reply since I'm using the phone now, but that movie had distortions equilvalent to saying for e.g. Joan of Arc escaping being burned and slaying all her captors.
