Hi all,

I am setting up a carputer as a media center for my van. It will mostly play movies and music but I am thinking of adding some games.

Gear:
USFF gx620 - Pentium D 3.4gz - 4gb ram. Windows 7 running on an SSD. 17" monitor. Two wired gamepads and two IR wireless headphones. I also have a wireless keyboard if needed (and an MCE remote).

So I am looking for game recommendations for kids age 8-13. Game needs to run OK on a system without a good video card (onboard video). It is a full sized van, so while the screen is 17" it will be a few feet from the seats.

Thanks,
Rob

Gamepads? I load that beast up with SNES and Genesis ROMs but, this is probably not the proper venue to suggest that
Well there's always settings you can enable or disable to adjust the quality... Let's see...

Straight up I'd first say emulators, specific SNES or Sega. Those will run and as long as the controllers are configured beforehand you'll have no problems. After that... I'll list off from my list of games.

MultiPlayer:
PixelJunk Shooters (pretty good, minimal plot, you don't need to read)
RingRunner (works for multiple people if they don't mind flying a duo both controlling 1 ship).
Aqua Kitty
Tyrian

Single Player:
Shovel knight (although a little hard core probably...)
Super Puzzle Platformer (I don't know if it's multiplayer so...)
Raiden legacy (multiplayer?)
ittle dew
costume quest (RPG so maybe not for younger kids)
Giana Sisters
Moto Racer 1-3 (I know there's multiplayer, but not sure if it's networked or does split screen)
Raptor (might be a little adult...)
Dust: An Elysian Tale
Rayman (Any?)
Fez
EvoLand
Rouge Legacy (Bit hardcore...)

There's quite a decent selection of Mega Drive/Genesis titles on Gamer's Gate, DotEmu & Steam.
I would say that emulators aren't a bad bet. Place some Tengen Tetris (the only 2P co-op puzzle I know) on a single screen? Amazing.

But yeah, I'd suggest games that can withstand a speedbump, just in case. No more bullet-hells for your 6 year-old.

I'd recommend one of my favorite DOS games: Star Control
Both games feature a 1-on-1 spacewars-style fight; the first game also has a 1-vs-1 strategy mode while the 2nd has a 1P story mode.

\\
OlliOlli (alternate players)
Race the Sun
Botanicula
Incredipede
Ittle Dew
The Cat Lady

Top Gear would be a good choice too. ZSNES, I guess.

Oh yeah, totally forgot about racing games like Mario Kart of Uniracers. (Which would sorta fit in the back of a car.) I was thinking more 'soft' titles like Pieces or On the Ball -- these are all SNES titles.)

Yes, and that Kirby golfing game.
Psyconauts

(for any occasion, there is always Psychonauts)

Top gear I didn't think was too impressive. Top Gear 2 though was :) Loved that game.

SNES games.. well probably too many to name... and few of them for 2 players...

Isn't that a bit depressing for kids?

GOMO is a cute little game, very short and easy so ideal for kids. Not a very popular game around here but I thought it was funny and enjoyed it a lot.
