Steam can be overthrown as easily as it can overthrow.

The market is very succeptible to changing trends and events.

It all depends on how adaptable or stable these companies are.

Nothing is concrete. Not even Microsoft.
While I wish this were true, it's probably just boasting.

I'd love it if Steam shut down, just to see all the fanboys cry.

I'm a horrible person.

Well, the Steam forums are kind of worthless, so I can see myself supporting this.

On an unrelated note, the Macintosh port of BioShock is on the Mac App Store but not on Mac Steam. Hilarious.

Makes sense. Why give your game for free to those that already purchased one version? ;)
Nice, more competition means better deals for us consumers, and less chance of being gluttoned by steam (hello Xbox Live and PSN). As my PC game buying consists of three services, GG , Steam and GoG being the third, I'm happy to see GG succeeding.

StingingVelvet: So... sort of a 50/50 shot there.
realistically i'd say it's more like 90/10. can you show me a precedent for the latter situation (sorry, i'm lazy)

The people who still buy boxed copies, which is still about half of PC game purchasers, have different ideals than people who are already going digital. Those ideals might match up more with Gamersgate than a constant social client like Steam. That is why I think he MIGHT be right.

That said Steam has a PR juggernaut going and that counts for a LOT, plus people tend to enjoy convenience over anything else and Steam is good about making you think it is more convenient. So, like I said, 50/50.

As for examples there are literally thousands of examples of juggernauts weakening over time, do I really need to list any examples? Playstation 2 to Playstation 3 jumps out at me immediately.

That's a fascinating sentence.

Steam is more convenient. If I could, I would even buy all my console games from them.

And the PS2 to PS3 argument is a bad example. Sure, they started out weak, but in the long run they're probably in a better place than they were before. Sony fucked a lot of things up at the start of this generation, but they more than made up for it through better marketing, a better console, better games, better exclusive deals, and a better price.

It's more convenient depending on your priorities and what you want out of it. I personally would choose a list of exe to download like on GOG over a client like Steam in a heartbeat... others love the client and features it offers. People are different. Right now Steam appeals to the majority of people who buy games digitally, but as more and more holdouts are forced to go digital will they want the same things? It's an intriguing question.

They went from dominating the console business like a lord king on high to being in third place, I don't know how else you could describe that other than weakening.
What really annoys me is I bought Fallout New Vegas and I didn't want to install Steam again because every time I do it always slows my system down and I just find it to be so annoying to use.

Plus I have game crashes happening whenever I use steam games. If I turn off steam when playing a non steam game my games don't crash at all. I just think you pay all that money for games on steam and you can't play them properly unless you are logged into the Steam program.

I don't hate steam, but I hate the DRM it enforces on it's users.

I just think GOG will one day be king of all Digital Gaming distribution services because they listen to their customers and always try to get what they request.

DRM is a ridiculous concept created to control and manipulate how you play your games that you paid good money for. That is why GOG Team will eventually succeed when all other companies still using some form of DRM will eventually fail.

...and then I woke up.
