I would like to know how scary these games are because I'm interested in them but I dislike games that are too scary.
GK - not really scary. They do have some spooky scenes but for the most part you'll be driven by curiosity rather than fear.
RotH has guns, monsters and does try to haunt you a lot. :)
The monsters in the ROTH screenshots don't look scary. They look like the kind of monsters you encounter in Oblivion.
girlie gamer :p gk1 was sort of scary when i was 16 and played it at night. 2 and 3 arent really scary.
It's not their design, it's bumping into them in unexpected tight places or right after picking up an important item. Mind, one of the guns not very far in the game has infinite rechargeable ammo. :) Alone in the Dark this is not.

Long dark hall and katana wielding monster spawns somewhere (you can tell monster type by spawn sound)... and it's the first sound you've heard apart from organ music in 5 minutes... you know people complain about prenumbra and amnesia? This time you have a gun...

Most games out there aren't too scary to me. I've only played less than a dozen that really scared me. But if a game is too scary, like those games that really scared me, then it will most likely give me nightmares. And I find nightmares very annoying.

lfie itself is a nightmare.

it will also differ per person some might not be able to watch a horror zombie movie while the other can see its just a movie and perhaps will even laugh about certain scenes.

Life itself is a nightmare? Where do you live because I don't want to accidentally move there. :P I don't want to wake up to something trying to decapitate me or separate me from my skin. :P

And laughing is just how they(the people who laugh during horror movies)cope with what they are seeing. Someone who is truly made of steel or ice or whatever(desensitized), could watch a horror movie the same way, one watches the grass grow. Back on topic, it sounds like Realms Of The Haunting is not my cup of tea.

Do you find Doom scary? Realms uses similar technology and tricks. For some people, the outdated graphics would take the edge off the horror.

Nonetheless, Realms is filled with dark rooms, ambushes, scary noises, ominous quiet, depressing themes, and some disturbing live-action video. It's very good at creating and maintaining a mature, frightening atmosphere, one of the best of its era.

Gabriel Knight is scary the way a Dracula movie is scary. Things happen to other people, not you the player, and the emphasis is on plot tension and supernatural mythology rather than frightening you. You'll be fine with it.

What are a couple borderline scary games for you?
Here are some games, I find really scary.

Undying, the first Blair Witch game, The Suffering, the Silent Hill games etc.

The haunted hotel in Vampire Bloodlines was also very scary but the rest of the game, no, so I guess that game is borderline scary for me. The Witcher is also borderline scary for me. And also Blood. :)

Realms isn't as visceral as Undying, but it's going for the same kind of atmosphere. So you might not enjoy it. Which is too bad, it's a great game with a unique feel.
Gabriel Knight games are more of a detective thrillers than horror games. Realms is entertaining fantasy game with horror elements, but it ain't scary either.
