Another one loving Freelancer - also managed to complete without cheating, but don't ask how, it was too long ago to remember!

Also used OpenSP as soon as it became available - the times spent scouring each section for wrecks and special weapon bonuses were happy times!
I also finished Freelancer without cheating. But I found the game just meh... sure, the mouse controls are alright, but 3rd person view and mouse controls just don't provide the same immersion level as a good old 1st person view and joystick controls. I found the combats lacking some depth, and quickly turning into a click fest with RPG-esque number crunching underneath. Not that I don't like those types of combats, but it wasn't what I expected from a space sim. And I found the whole economy-grinding thing boring as hell, but that's really just me : I simply hate economy-based games. And don't get me started on the whole 'various country stereotypes in space' setting... The plot was OK, though.

For me, Freelancer is a decent game, especially in multiplayer with a few friends and some nice mods, but it's not a masterpiece. I still play Freespace 2 very regularly, but I haven't touched Freelancer since I've finished it.
To be fair, for a more casual game, Darkstar One is probably better. However, X3 is more complex and probably more than a bit more interesting. More realistic piloting, too. I gotta dig my joystick out and play X3 some more...
I also love Freelancer and have finished it two times :) The final missions are hard, but they never seemed impossible... I always bought the powerful Anubis fighter (or whatever it was called), that you get offered for a few bucks at the end of the game and pretty much stormed the rest without significant problems...

I want to ask...
Crossfire vs. Discovery mods. From what I'm reading, both seem almost the same to me, which one is considered better?

Syme: I managed to finish without cheats, though it took several tries on the last battle. I don't remember how I did it though beyond having the Germanesqe heavy fighter. The game was a lot of fun. If the game had a dynamic economy rather than set prices everywhere, I might still be flying my Humpback around popping lane hackers with mine and turrets.

Aliasalpha: I think one of the mods completely changes the economy
I remember trying one, but since the game wasn't designed around that kind of economy, it didn't seem to sit well. I'm not sure why, but I just had a feeling that it wasn't working quite right.
A very flawed, but quite a fun game. Never used the multiplayer, so can't really comment on the mods (most of them are geared towards multiplayer). I know many of them claim to improve singleplayer also, but i personally can't stand how they spam multiplayer specific messages in singleplayer game.
To the question of the thread title: I don't think there are any legitimate PC gamers here that are NOT fans of the game.

Just recently received a (jewelcase :/) copy of the game so I can finally replay it.
Has anyone tried the unofficial 1.4 patch? Is it worth installing for someone just wanting to play vanilla Freelancer?
I loved Freelancer. It was somewhat limited in gameplay, but the game universe was well thought out and very immersive. I also remember the storyline as being rather good.

Ages since I played, but I still remember stumbling into a place somewhere and seeing this huge rotating circular thing in space, might have been a black hole. It didn't appear to have any function other than being a background object, but it was almost like an epiphany.

I think it was somewhere in the Omichron system (can't really remember all the names, this is a guess)

Weird what games can make you feel.....
I've only played the CrossFire mod and I think its excellent but if you cant cope with the vanilla difficulty you will be toast - it's a lot more difficult. I'm not an amazing player but I got up to standard after 3 or 4 hours.

Get rich quick by selling captured enemies and buy a better ship and equipment as soon as possible... check the CrossFire wiki for where you'll find the stuff for sale and where the prisons are to sell your prisoners. In combat keep moving, dont fly in one direction for too long... double back and attack anyone who's pursuing you and concentrate on attacking one target at a time - get his shields down and then blow him up. There are 3 different types of weapons and 3 corresponding shields to protect against them. If youre stuck on a set piece battle, your weapons may be the least affective against their shields and your shields least affective against their weapons... you can look up your enemies in the wiki and see what loadout they carry then change yours to suit.

I think thats a quasar thats got two huge cones of stuff shooting out of the poles. CrossFire adds loads of content like that.
i played it and completed it was epic fun i installed it recently and there's something wrong with it with the sound so that you cannot here the audio for mission briefs is there any fixes for this??
