wolfsrain: The initial loading time is because the game is loading all the expansions/stuff packs (which are many). The rest depends on your imagination. You can kill your sims in atrocious ways if that's what you like, manage their lives, build thier housing, create a commercial or leisure area and so on. A lot of the game is based of what YOU CAN IMAGINE.

Get super rich and famous? The only goals are the ones you set for yourself.
The first two Sims were more of a Sandbox affair. You come back, make your pass, leave it for a while. And then, you rinse and repeat. Sims Stories and Sims 3 have a bit of a different structure. Sims Stories can be finished, while Sims 3 has stories and quests (Sims3 is also a sandbox, but you can do also the stuff that devs put in the game). Yeah, i confess: i'm a Sims fan. I've kiled many Sims, saved as many from their own stupidity, hell, you can call me the destroyer of worlds and god almighty:P

So it could be like real life.. Have no goal, get old and die thinking "could have gone better" *death gurgle*

Pretty much. It is a life simulator after all:D

I usually have a goal in mind before I make a sim and/or family. Occasionally I even get around to accomplishing it, often I don't. So, yeah, pretty close to real life, in that way.

I have always thought of myself as a fairly 'hardcore' gamer, and I usually play RPGs and TBS games. I tried Sims 3 on lark a while back and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Sims 3 is actually a pretty good open-world sand-box RPG set in the modern day, if a person wants to think of it that way. I don't have much experience with the first two iterations, but I am guessing they are fairly similar in this respect.

Thing is THEY NEVER TOLD ME!
If they are giving this away for free now why not just add it here on GOG too? They could still sell it at a small price and make a killing from all those who always wanted a Sim game.

They'd have to remove the SecuROM DRM first...
Sweet! Thank you very much for the heads up ne_zavarj :)

Ah. That would be way too much trouble for EA then.

Shame.
