All my life I've been living in the Vault. When I was a kid, some of the elders used to tell me stories, that they had again heard when they were kids from their elders, about the vast, beautiful outside world. Hills covered with green grass and trees, huge cities where people lived in unity and prosperity. It sounded so wonderful and magical, and it made me wonder why we chose to live inside the Vault. When asked, they never gave me a straight answer.
Years later I still dreamed of seeing the outside world, so when one of the computer chips for out water purifyer broke, I quickly volunteered to go out and search for a new one.
So there I was, a 17 year old girl, about to step out into the world for the first time. I was given what could be spared of our supplies - a handgun, some ammo, a hunting knife, and a couple of stimpacks - and directions to search for another vault to the east, who could hopefully help us.
As I stepped out of the Vault for the very first time, I could feel my heart beat, my body fill with adrenaline. I had some training with light firearms, but the ammo was scarce, so I armed myself with my knife. From living in the Vault, I had also learned how to sneak around in the shadows undected, and I was quite adept at pickpocketing. Growing up, we rarely had enough food, and being able to stealthily take some one elses had saved me from going to be hungry many a night.
Outside the Vault was a network of caves and tunnels, filled with malevolent rats. I suffered some minor bruises, but I managed to dispatch of them with my knife, and make my way to the exit.
The sun burned in my eyes as I stepped out into the daylight for the first time of my life. I couldn't see a thing - I had never imagined anything could be so bright. While I stood there waiting for my eyes to adjust, I felt a gentle breeze caress my skin. It was the most wonderful feeling I have ever experienced... Well, maybe second most, after the time when I was 13 where I snuck up on Billy, two year younger than me, and silently snagged the bottle of Nuka-Cola he got for his birthday. Ah, but I digress.
When my eyes finally adjusted to the light, I felt my heart... drop. No green grass, no trees - all I could see was a dusty, rocky, barren wasteland all around me. A bit disappointed I started walking towards the east.
On my way east, I was attacked by another pack of stinky rats, but I made quick work of them with my knife. Shortly after that I encountered a small outpost or village. I felt a bit uneasy at first, as the guard was pointing straight at me with a shotgun, but after I introduced myself and told them of my errand, they were friendly enough. I did notice a slight bulge in the guard's pocket, and since he clearly wasn't happy to see me, I snuck up behind him. Shortly thereafter I walked away with some bottle caps and a rope, which I figured might come in handy. I also snagged a couple of stimpacks from the local doctor. Hey, I might need them, and he won't miss'em. Not until after I am gone, at least.
A woman I encountered in the town turned out to be a refugee from the vault I was heading for. She confirmed that they had had a spare water chip, but something about the way she spoke of her old vault made me uneasy. I better be on my guard when I get there.
I also encountered a bloke, Ian, who offered to join me on my travels for a hundred bottle caps. I didn't have that amount, but we managed to... work something out, if you catch my drift. ;)
Me and my new companion left the village and went looking for the vault again. Shortly after leaving, we encountered a couple of giant moles, or something. I don't think I could have handled them on my own, but with my new friend they weren't a match for us. After walking for days and days, I realised that we had taken a wrong turn somewhere, and ended up far longer south than we intended. Tired, we decided to return to the village, and rest there for a while. On the way back, we were ambushed by a pack of huge scorpions. I fled as fast as I could, but Ian managed to down one of them before following me.
Now we've just arrived back in the village, and will nurture our wound before setting out again.
