HereForTheBeer: Frontline here, too. Our mutts don't get any fleas, ticks, etc., using that stuff.

Might ask your vet if a heartworm preventative is a decent idea for a few months, since there has been an infestation.

orcishgamer: This, I just used the regular store bought medicine. You need to put it on whenever the dosing says (every so many months), it keeps their blood levels caustic to the little buggers.

I've no idea about natural remedies, I'd be somewhat skeptical, personally, the little bastards jump off, lay eggs in your carpet, then in two weeks the babies start chewing on your dog too, doesn't matter if mom and dad are dead at that point, they're sexually mature almost instantly.
Frontline. :)

And like Orchish said about the eggs, you MUST wash your dog's bedding every couple of days for about a month, as it takes all the eggs that long (30 days or so) to hatch. If you don't, he'll just keep getting bitten by new fleas.

It's an absolute pain in the butt to keep washing blankets etc. but you'll get rid of the fleas a lot faster and your dog will be much happier if you do.

BTW, if anyone has rabbits and they ever get mites in their ears, I have a killer remedy for them. Literally. Honey diluted in water, dribbled in the ears every other day for a month. Kills off the mites, smothers their eggs. After 30 days they're completely gone. My rabbits were in agony as the vet prescribed stuff wasn't working. Used honey, killed the mites straight away and healed my rabbit's ears. Plus, the mites never came back.

dae6: One thing I'd keep an eye our for after a flea infestation is the possibility of worms. My wife and I got a new puppy a few months back, and he managed to get fleas. We handled that through a frontline type treatment, but a couple weeks later he ended up with tapeworms. From what I understand, it turns out that fleas have a fondness for tapeworm eggs, and dogs may often end up ingesting infected fleas, and end up with worms themselves.
A lot of worms actually get carried by mosquitoes and flies. I'm not a dog expert by any means, but I've never heard of a flea carrying them. I suppose a flea infestation may lower the dog's immune system allowing it to be more easily compromised, though.

I'm no expert either, this is just what I read when I looked into tapeworm infections online. It's possible it's not entirely accurate. From what I read it's not the actual having of fleas and having them pass the worms through the blood but a result of the dog (probably inadvertently) eating the flea. Quick search, for example, pulled up this: http://www.allivet.com/HealthGuide/post/The-Facts-about-Tape-Worm.aspx

Again, I am not sure how accurate this information is, but it might be worth keeping an eye on a dog who has fleas just in case.

I have a Siberian Husky and I use Advantix from Bayer and it works great.
I went to the vet and got "Advantage Plus", which is a product similar to Frontline I believe. He got instant relief, or so I thought, but the next day, he started scratching again. He isn't as bad, but I am a little worried. How long do these products take?
