I think I may have fixed it. Turns out having the network cable in it was stopping it for some reason... or because I had something in the usb port at the front, but from memory I didn't always have it in when it broke.
My laptop won't load Windows while my phone is plugged in, so this isn't a crazy idea.

Ah, good to know. Seems pretty stable so far as long as it isn't connected.

I also might offer some advice to anyone with an older machine - if your computer is running a bit hot, check the CPU heatsink - my CPU was almost at 70*c under load, but now I cleaned it it never goes over 40.
