Not usually one to toot about games going DRM-free - Steam exclusivity is starting to become a thing of the past for the most part in any case - but I've just received a very interesting tweet from SubAtomic Studios about Fieldrunners.

Fieldrunners is IMHO one of the best tower defense games out there, although it's Windows release a while back was sadly botched beyond all recognition. Still, they've more or less committed to working out the problems, and when I asked them if they were planning on bringing Fieldrunners and the upcoming Fieldrunners 2 to a DRM-free platform, I got this:

What could this mean? GOG? Humble Store? Desura?

jamyskis: tower defense
Ok I stopped reading right there. I just don't like them, at least the ones I've played so far.

I guess it is suprising because I like many RTS games, but I feel tower defence games in general are simplified and bastardized RTS games. Maybe ok for smartphones and tablets, as the controls are not good enough for proper RTS games.

Fieldrunners was originally an iOS/Android game, by far the most successful in it's genre, between the two platforms they sold millions.

I agree that it's not really suited to desktop play, but can't blame them for trying to cash in.

Well, with the refinements suggested in the Steam forums (and for the most part accepted by Subatomic) it would be a much better desktop game. Its tablet origins are apparent when you play it, and there are a few interface fuck-ups as a result, but it's otherwise a great game (even though I'm generally not a tower defense fan).

Funnily enough, I first played it on the PSP with a joypad. Takes some getting used to playing it with a mouse.
