I just came across this post on SRMZ.
Essentially FIA the governing body behind car racing events like Formula 1 and WRC is threating with legal action if modders don't stop making mods of FIA licenced events.
Somehow I'm not surprised, I know certain companies weren't happy about people making free mods for games but I haven't seen this rash action before.

As a big sim racing consumer, I have no problem with this.
Well, it will affect games that rely heavily on mods, rFactor, Project CARS, Assetto Corsa and if it sets a precedent it could affect all sort of mods in the future.

I never felt like it was right to use trademarks in extra content, unless they got the permission. People just want the name and don't care about the quality.

What is the point?

Is there some direct damage they are experiencing as a result of people wanting to play their games...?

its not about what makes sense or harm really.

I guess you've got a point there, though I disagree about the quality, a lot of mods are of very good quality and I think that's where also the problem is.

FIA earns a lot selling licenses for games.

Sure, it's not hard to make Codemasters look bad. xD
I can never see the point in "licensed" games. All we end up with are games that cannot be sold after the deal is up and people loose out, just look at that Wallice and Gromet game, the TOCA and Collin McCray games they all end up being pulled because someone with a logo or trademark goes "nope" to further sales.

I think companies should either be happier about the sale of the games full stop and just okay the use of a licence within the game once and be done or developers should give them the finger. No game need the licence to be good, it is just used to give it brand awareness. Companies should have more faith in their games and we should begin culling the number of lawyers in the world.
