hi all!

I am looking for fantasy authors from Poland who should be (internationally) known and/or are important for the polish fantasy literature.

A friend of mine currently researches this topic for an article she is going to write. This is the list she made so far:

Andrzej Sapkowski
Anna Brzezińska
Paulina Braiter-Ziemkiewicz
Edytę Szulc
Jacek Dukaj
Jakub Ćwiek
Rafał Aleksander Ziemkiewicz
Anna Kańtoch
Maja Lidia Kossakowska
Jarosław Grzędowicz
Konrad T. Lewandowksi

Science-Fiction focused writers:
Janusz Andrzej Zajdel
Andrzej Ziemiański
Edmund Wnuk-Lipiński
Stanislaw Lem

Did she forget somebody important?
Does anyone know an author who is missing and should be on the list?

It would be great, if you could help! :-)

Marcin Wolski. Even though his speciality is satire/political fiction he usually mixes many fantasy/sci-fi elements in his novels. He got 3 Zajdel awards and they are for fantasy/sci-fi stories so he does qualify ;) Personally, I really like to read his books because you get not only a nice story (like from other fantasy authors) but a sort of satiric commentary to real life events/situations.
Eugeniusz Dębski - great Owen Yates books.
Jacek Piekara - stories about Arivald
Robert M. Wegner - Stories from Meekhanese Border

I don't know any writers but if you had asked for fantasy illustrators, Grzegorz Rosinski would be your go-to guy.

Forgive me if this is off topic but I'm so happy that they are making a museum for his art, opening in July 2014 in Delémont:

(He is Polish but lives in Switzerland so we got lucky and get the museum!)

Coincidentally, this is the name which came into my mind aswell when my friend asked. :-) She'd thought about writing something about comic artist, too, but there is already much(!!) to write about if you just focus on fantasy novelists.

Thanks, Ghorpm and tburger, for your suggestions so far! :)
And thank you for writing some info about your suggestions or which books are connected to them. This helps in further research as a starting point.
Paulina Braiter-Ziemkiewicz is a translator (a good one, imo), but not really an important author.

Edyta Szulc is not a fantasy author.

I'd say Dukaj is rather sci-fi author.

Most important sci fi authors are:
- Lem
- Dukaj
- Zajdel

For me it's also Huberath

Most important fantasy authors:
- Sapkowski
- Grzędowicz
- Pilipiuk
- Brzezińska
- Kossakowska
- Ćwiek
- Kańtoch
- Piekara
- Wegner
- Ziemiański

Ziemkiewicz is not a fantasy author anymore

I'd also like to point that some of those authors are important to Polish literature, because they sell many books, but those books are not necessary very good.

Others, like Dukaj or Huberath for example, would be known world wide, if they were writing in English.

Still haven't read his stuff so I don't know him.
oh thanks, SLP2000! Your post is a great additional help.

Thanks for looking critically over the established list and correcting some names. This now means more work for my friend of course, but one that is much appreciated. :)

Of course there are no infinite good and important Fantasy writers in Poland (are they?:-) but if anyone comes up with further suggestions or different opinions about the list so far, it would be great to hear. Even if probably not every name is going to be used, it is a good ressource for me and surely others aswell, who like to read good fantasy. And, personally, in these days i like polish (and russian) fantasy quite much.
SLP2000 made a good list. Personally I enjoyed Pilipiuk's books the most, I've read almost everything written by him. He's one of the bestselling fantasy authors as well.

Have a look at site of Fabryka Słów ("Factory of Words"):

http://fabrykaslow.com.pl/autorzy

It's one of the biggest, if not the biggest one fantasy publishing house in Poland and most of the big authors publish there. The site is in Polish, but have a look anyway - might be very helpful. Under "Książki" link you'll have list of books by this author :-)

RUNA yes, Powegraph not really. Apart from Fabryka Słów and RUNA biggest fantasy publishers are MAG and superNOWA.

Zysk i spółka, Rebis.
I've marked one of the above posts as the solution for this topic. It was the most helpful post for my friend.

But THANK YOU very much to you ALL for helping out.

You can read the result of your help here:
