So - what are YOU a fanboy of ?

Vestin: I'd take fanboys over haters any day.
What I do not like, however, are unreasonable people of any kind.

And no - if you think something sucks and has no redeeming qualities, you shouldn't visit its fans' forum and passionately express that to them.
Definitely, unfortunately, you usually don't get fanboiism without them being a hater as well.

I've taken to just not responding to some of the more asinine comments people make, it's outlandish sometimes the degree to which they'll go to rationalize their POV.

Ultimately, one doesn't get to have it both ways, either something is a negative always or there had better be damned good reason why it's not the same.

I'm guessing hating. Or possibly fanboy bashing.

If I'm honest, I like the GOG forums. The trolling is kept to a minimum, fanboy flamewars are usually brief, relatively civil and restricted to topics of whether X and X game should have expansions or is too expensive, and off-topic discussions aren't reduced to puerile jokes.

As someone quite rightly said, the primary visitorship of GOG - people who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s (or maybe even earlier) with these games - will tend to be more mature than the 14-year-old spoilt brat whose mummy pays for his Call of Duty addiction.

jamyskis: I'm starting to reach the end of my tether with fanboys.
Its why I like GoG... you don't have to be a fan boy since they don't do anything wrong. :p

I've been a SEGA fanboy my entire life. The fact that they no longer make hardware hasn't changed that in the slightist. I don't think that being a fanboy makes it impossible to have a real discussion about games though. My best friend in school growing up was a Nintendo fanboy but that didn't stop us from playing eachothers games on opposing hardware. Infact, I remember that we had very opposing viewpoints on many aspects of gaming culture but some of the best discussion I've ever had on the subject was with him. Certainly, we had our silly arguments along the lines of: "who would win in a fight, Sonic or Mario?" but that was all in good fun. At the end of the day, we were both gamers and it was still something we could share.

I think this discussion relies heavily on a single equivocation. Sometimes the word "fanboys" is used to (1) denote people who (a) favor something unconditionally and (b) are unwilling to accept any criticism or admit of its flaws. Other times it's used to (2) speak of people who really like something ontically higher than a person. It is implicitly assumed that group 2 will share all the characteristics of group 1 and the positive feelings are what leads to ignorance.
Which I find unjustified.
I also dislike the normative suggestion that people ought to be opportunistic at all times, rather than grow fond of anything.
I don't understand why people get riled up about fanboys. Let them whine, can't hurt ya. We ave better games and a better sense of quality and a realistic outview on products.
What the hell Obama?!! First you drop the public option, then you give the richest people in the world a tax break, and then you drop your environment reform legislation! On top of that your Secretary of State tried to get GTA-SA banned! That was the best GTA!! And I'm not even going to touch the ongoing war or the Middle East policy that's the same as the last administration's or the closing of GITMO that was supposed to be done three years ago.
What the hell man? I'm glad I was too cool to vote in 2008 otherwise I would feel like a real ass right about now. I'm also glad that I moved to the UK because now that I have graduated and don't have insurance I would be totally F-ed in the A back in the US. Seriously, that trip to the doctor last month would have cost me a month's salary in the US. Here? Free. Well, £7.50 co-pay if you count the trip to the chemist, but I made it up when I grabbed a handful of condoms on the way out, which are free here like all contraceptives though not in the US. You want to know the sad thing? I would be paying more in taxes in the US! While I can't bring myself to vote Republican, I can bring myself to be too cool in 2012...And also voting absentee would be a pain in the ass.
Oh, yeah. And fan boys do suck. Everything in life will one day let you down. Denial will only make you look like a Nintendo fan.

Rant over. Stay tuned for my rant against Labour.
