How come they took Fallout 3's "Simulated slideshow complete with clacking slides noise" title cards and replaced them with "fade-over" cards?

I assume nothing more than a design decision. The slides in Fallout 3 were a reference to the G.O.A.T. all characters take in the intro section. The courier is already an adult and wasn't a Vault dweller so never took one.

Wraith: Have about 7+ hours under my belt of play time, so here are my impressions. Keep in mind that I have been a huge fan of the Fallout series since the first game came out when I was in high school, and I actually like Fallout 3.

Gameplay is similar to Fallout 3. Duh. However, the entire world in which the game takes place is much more accurate to the original series, which gives a HUGE sense of nostalgia that was missing from Fallout 3. When I heard to the background music to Necropolis (I think it was that track. I know it was the deserted/evil city track from the first game) playing when I entered the "attacked city" (don't want to give spoilers) I couldn't help but smile.

I am playing on hardcore mode since I wanted the full Fallout experience from the original games, and I have to say it is a bit more challenging than just dropping stimpacks on everything. Difficulty was getting insane with it early on. However, once I got Boone, hardcore mode turned into super easy mode, with me and him sniping every single raider and legionnaire we ran into without taking a hit.

Overall, I'm quite happy with it, but then again, I was happy with Fallout 3 as well. This one just captures the essence of the first two games (Especially 2) much more.
Pretty much my exact thoughts... throw in better writing too. It's amazing how much the scattered tracks from Fallout 1 and 2's soundtracks add to the game, not just as nostalgia but also simply because they are better music than Fallout 3's on average.

Wraith: On a side note, I am getting pissed with the complete lock ups the game has. I got it for my PS3 since I wanted to relax on my couch and play it on my 47 inch tv, but after an hour and half - 2 hours of playtime the game locks up and freezes the whole system. I know they are working on it, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating in the meantime.
I'd give you a debate about hooking your PC up to the TV and playing with the Xbox controller but I'm sure you know you can do that already. I've heard both console versions and significantly more bugged than the PC one, sadly.

Don't you find boone really really dull though? Never says a word and really feels like a floating turret. Cass is a far more fun companion and has a good investigative quest. I never found boone's quest after recrruiting him

What companions have people found? Most people would have found Boone, Cass is also recruitable after you do the rather long mission she gives you and there's a doctor (called Arcade something) in the mormon camp, there's also a supermutant called Lily that you can team with for a job but I suspect she'd stick around afterwards and of course the now obligatory dog Rex

That's not surprising; the PC version has received two patches, while the console versions don't have any so far. The game will also have been built on the PC and then ported to the consoles, so the console versions get their own new bugs in addition to inheriting some from the PC.

Console version received one which was similar to the 200+ fix patch we first received..er 360 at least, not sure on PS3.

Boone fits my playstyle perfectly. Both of us with rifles, slinking around the wastes sniping the living hell out of anything bad that comes across our path. The only other follower I found was Veronica (or was it Victoria?) who wound up getting killed by Fiends 5 minutes after I got her. I like her character, but she doesn't complement my current skills too well. If I had better firepower and more skill, I would use her over Boone just to have her for when I get something that gets too close.

In the meantime, Boone does just fine.

I'm using Boone and he's very overpowered, at least early on... he kills everything before I even get a chance to shoot it seems like.

trusteft: Please let us know how it is on it. :)
Well, I got it and playeda few hours. Haven't played the shit out of it yet due to my specially imported copy of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune arriving on the same day (seriously, it's impossible to find a copy of that game anywhere in Norway).

But, I played past the first few towns and got a good impression of the game.

First, the graphics are OK but nothing more. I haven't played F3 on the PS3 so I can't compare, and I'm not sure what to blame the engine for vs. what to blame the game for. However it is immediately obvious that the engine is basically the F3 engine, which again is a modified version of the Oblivion engine, which is by now severely outdated. And it shows on the big screen, even if it's rendering 720p.

The draw distance is actually huge, it might even be larger than in F3, but the details are really lacking when looking at a distance. While this is partly caused by the fact that the world is a grime desert where small bushes and straws cling to life by a thread, the overall detail and texture reduction is noticeable. Also, the antialiasing is fairly poor, leading to many obvious and rough edges. There's a bit less bloom though, which is good.

The frame rate however is high and consistent. The controls also work flawlessly, no problem managing the complex task of playing this game on hardcore (which I am) with only a standard controller.

The hardcore mode is awesome by the way. You have to take dehydration, food, and sleep into account (as well as radiation and other stuff), and any beneficial effects like healing are now an over time effect. Also ammunition has weight, which you would sort of expect it to in the first place, but unless you turn hardcore mode on you can carry 37 metric fucktons of ammunition. It's pretty realistic while not being overly punishing, and adds a LOT to the "alone in the wasteland" feel of the game. A brilliant move imo. Especially since hardcore mode and overall game difficulty are separate variables. You can play a hardcore game on the easy difficulty if you so wish.

In summary, the game is very enjoyable, the graphics are not truly next-gen. Read Dead Redemption did the whole wild wild west a lot better from a graphical standpoint. However the gameworld itself seems to be well realized. It's a desert, let's make it look like a desert. It does.

Oh, and I came upon a small detail outside the starting town which I found awesome. There's a fridge there. It's got a skeleton and a nice brown leather hat in it. Anybody take the reference?
Thank you.

I have to say that this was the thing I had the most trouble adapting to, I had ammunition kleptomania in F3 and even carried around 5000 5mm rounds because you never know when you're going to be out of the other brahmin train worth of ammo you're lugging around and find a handy minigun. I'm using a sweet anti-materiel sniper rifle (basically an M107 Barrett) I picked up from the gun runners and the ammo for that thing is heavy as hell, 4 rounds make up a pound so taking the 150-200 rounds I normally take isn't possible

You using the wild wasteland starting perk that makes everything a bit zany? I was debating that for things like the indy reference but decided to keep the first play a serious one

Once you get an apartment or house it's not that bad, you can just fast travel back to it to drop off/pickup ammo anytime.

Lol, is that what it is? I had no idea what that did, I just thought it sounded cool and turned it on. Although now I'm expecting to find purple flamengo transvestite clowns playing ukuleles and washing eachothers ear canals with a cloth soaked in cactus juice and pimp sweat.

Wild Wasteland fills the game with pop-culture references. Star Wars, Aliens, Monty Python keep your eyes open. They are always accompanied by a wierd music track and a Vault Boy icon with dizzy eyes. Just found two burned corpses in Nipton called Owen and Beru. Also I wont spoil where but later in the game you can get the Gauss Rifle however if you have Wild Wasteland we meet our Mothership Zeta aliens again complete with an Alien Blaster to loot instead.

Graphics are kinda crap, yeah (on PC too), but everything else is so damn good you can overlook it. This is definitely the last game they can release on this version of the engine...another and I think people would let Bethesda have it.

Glad for the PC mods though..there are already some which greatly improve the graphics, though they seem premature as of now.
