Loved the improvements made in F2, but felt like it had too much to do & too many empty buildings...just felt like it wasn't as tightly put together as F1.

StingingVelvet: I have a hard time picking between the two, I love both. I will go with Fallout 2 though, for having a cooler villain and for introducing the vaults-as-social-experiments idea.
Funnily enough, the reasons I prefer the first game include Fallout 2's villain and the vaults-as-social-experiments idea. I really hate both of those.

I agree with what some people already said, Fallout is just tighter and more focused. Fallout 2 has its moments of brilliance, but also quite a few things that really should have been left out (classic example: the Hubologists). Fallout is more consistent.
It's difficult to say.coz Fallout 1 was more consistent -story/gameplay wise and had a tighter richer atmosphere(The demo was incredibly fun too with junktown which turned out differently in the full game). Fallout 2 re-introduced many of the elements from 1 with better control over your team mates but was far less consistent - story/atmosphere wise with several plot deviations( Play it with RP as it fixes most of the msissing content) but it was a heckuva lot more fun to play. (It had more porks too!)

IMHO I found the end boss in fallout 1 to far more intriguing as I wasn't expecting something of that sort.

I absolutely loved NEW Reno in 2- plus it was the only game then where you could be a porn star, prizefighter and be married at the same time!

I also loved the part where you leave the dwarf bounty hunter back in the well. Meeting Harold and Ian again was splendid and you get to screw around a lot in 2. The marriage parts were fun I think as it depicts the agony of marriage to a certain degree very well.

The most fun thing about 2 were the dialogue choices . Also once you become a prizefighter, made man or pornstar - the subsequent reaction of npc characters were rather hillarious. I reminisce about how annoyed I was with Myron and how I left him to die in that brain extraction chamber....

I don't remember such moments from the original other than Ian getting killed in the mutant facility and the discovery of necropolis which was very creepy.

I"ll have to go with 2 as it makes me far more nostalgic than the original and the gameplay was far more fun.

BTW I have yet to begin playing new vegas - how does it compare to 2?

Played Fallout 2 first and Fallout 1 a long time afterwards. I prefer 2. I've finished it many many times, while Fallout 1 I only played it the one time. It felt like a step backwards.
Love both of them but I prefer Fallout 2 anytime.

Right, New Vegas. Take sort of crappy fighting system from F3, add iron sights, amazing writing with conspiracy, mostly shades of grey and you finally get a true Fallout story. I enjoyed New Vegas more than Fallout 2 and less than Fallout 1 (I just go for the better story and atmosphere). Dialogue is amazing, world is joy to explore, it's amazingly grim and realistic and ... Well just get it.
I like the first one better because I tend to get lost or sidetracked in number two.

Well because Fallout 3 wasn't fundametally broken, it was just really badly written and black and white, with world nearly unrelated to that of Fallout 1 and 2. Playing New Vegas, however, left me standing with my jaws wide open by how genious was that thing that just happened several times. Pure awesome.

I was sad that my computer is 'teh sux0rz.' I wanted to play it (the "survival" mode sounded awesome)
I have the vanilla version (paid someone to gift it to me). Need to get the DLC somehow since the game is banned in my region.
