LordKuruku: They only ever teach you this stuff in school once, if at all (I know they never taught me what a semicolon is, and I still don't have a firm grasp of it's proper use), and learning more English on one's own is no easy task, so I suppose it can't really be helped.
Miaghstir: The Oatmeal can help you with that semicolon.
That was actually rather helpful. Much more than reading the Wikipedia article for the umpteenth time. Still, that's one of the things that bothered me about school. I even specifically asked about it from my earliest years to about sometime in middle school, with it always falling on deaf ears. Going through the years of K-12, and not learning how to use part of punctuation. I still remember seeing cardboard cutouts of all the punctuation symbols lining the wall, and asking the teacher "What is this one you haven't told us yet?", only to be met with "It's a semicolon" and little more than that, with subsequent requests met with little or no response.
I doubt I need to go on explaining the abysmal state of education, seeing as the fact that most people barely know how to use periods these days provides a more than adequate demonstration. I might actually be intelligent if they, you know, answered the questions that young minds had wished to ask them, but then I suppose it was never their place to grant miracles...
I'm sure we all know the true purpose of the public education system regardless. -_-;
