Anything no longer for sale through the publisher/developer I download without guilt. I am a firm believer in the abandonware concept.

I was pretty annoyed when the Wii launched and all those old console classics went up for sale again. Had to delete most of my ROMs.

qazx: Its not that i dont have some of the systems its that under normal curusmstances i cant use any of them. thats my reason i use emulation. alot of pepole use emulation for lets plays(though not everyone). however i can understand the whole situation with abandonware on the pc. i use it for checking out games i never owned or played before but if dos games are avaible on a site like this being sold i wont download them.i can understand up to stuff like the n64 but not stuff like a ps2 or other modern emulation systems.
I passed up Guilty Gear X2 many a time because I knew GOG had it here and a few days ago I purchased it. =)

I did try to the snag (without success) the newer release that came out after X2. =P

Gremmi: Interesting article on accuracy in emulation

The TL;DR version: Most emulators use tricks which means you're probably not playing a 'perfect' version (if that actually matters).
Most emulated games can be modified as well. I'm just happy that kids this generation are more into community modding hacked software as opposed to hiding malicious trojans and viruses in them like the kids of my generation did.

I came from the generation that liked to sneak razor blades in kid's Halloween apples. =/

orcishgamer: I'm sick of rewarding so called "speculators" (aka dickheads that fuck shit up for everyone else due to their poorly thought out greed). Frankly if it's not available first party for for cents on the dollar, just get a dumped ROM for free.

Otherwise you see shit like this: http://www.amazon.com/Tailow-Pokeball-Flip-out-Transform-Japanese/dp/B000OUZLUA/ref=sr_1_20?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1320105468&sr=1-20 (yes, this is a 5-7 USD toy).

hedwards: The correct answer is to get copyright law reformed, not give more ammunition to the people trying to get terms extended out into infinity.

Ultimately, I have absolutely no sympathy for the idiots that lost thousands and thousands of dollars when the beanie baby craze fell through.

There are expensive carts, but the most expensive mass market ones I've seen represented a 400% or so increase over the original and that's only a handful of them. PC games seem to have a much larger problem with that. The only carts that have managed to be more expensive than that were ones that were genuine collectors items. And those aren't that much different than rare stamps or pre-collapse baseball cards.
When it comes to discontinued games I can only see it hurting the economy - but let's face it - no one is a saint. The 'legitimate' business and sales world only know how to operate lawfully because they can afford lawyers to show them all the loopholes to hack and some of the big syndicates are heavily influential as to which laws get set in stone.

Here in 2011 I think I everyone has realized that every one is a bullshitter but I also think that things are being handled a lot more responsibly (see my comment about today's modding communities VS the destructive hacking community from my era).

The old school pirates used to just rip everyone off - nowadays they're fixing games and making them worth purchasing digitally in the first place.

Or hide them in the attic until they go off sale again. XD
