Today i woke on and started up steam and went to play empire total war (which i just finished downloading a day ago) and it brought up a window showing it was downloading, figured it was an update.

I checked how much it was and it was the full download of 9.8 gb, it took me a bit over a week most of the day downloading so i am obviously annoyed.

So my question is i have the files still and i tried verifying the files when it went wacky and again after i put the old files into the folder and installed it again (it said it was using the files already there during the install but the same thing full download again) so is there anything i can do or am i just out of luck.

Thanks for your time and hopefully help

Did you buy it from Steam or on disc?

This is not a guaranteed solution - it never seems to work for me - but if you wish to avoid time-consuming downloads, you can right-click on the game, click on Properties, go to the Updates tab and select "Do not update this game" (or whatever it is in English).

Of course, you need to do this while the game is installing from your DVD or backup (proper Steam backup, not a Steamapps folder copy), as the game will update automatically as soon as it is installed and ignore any changes to this option while downloading the massive update, and the option oddly cannot be modified while the game is not installed.

Naturally, this is all theoretical. I've never been able to get this to work personally - regardless of the setting, Steam always insists on downloading updates.
