squishysupreme: You mention ISOs, but You can't *find* the original Tomb Raider CDs anywhere that are legitimate or don't have viruses and such on them. The only version that you can find has all of the music and cut-scenes removed. (Legality issues not even being considered) It's just not worth it.

There you go :) .... And im pretty sure it is ethical to download a working version of a game you have paid money for (and your copyright laws state you can have one Physical backup so when you download it burn it to a disk... add it to the original case and wollah!!! if you get the email of Internet abuse sendf them back a photo of your game proving your innocence :P

Yeah, ebay and amazon are full of legitimate discs for those games, and almost any other. If you care about having all the packaging then it might be hard to find, but since GOG has no packaging I doubt that is the issue.
My point is that you can't actually FIND a full copy to download, even if you wanted to. You must buy the CD. Of course, there's the issue of shipping. Does it cost more than $5.99 or even close to it?

I did a search here in the U.S.(not going to have something shipped overseas if I can help it) and I found $4.18 for Tomb Raider, $13.98 for the collection*, and $6.98 for Deus Ex.

*The collection seems like a good idea, but it won't work with the various patches as it fails the copy protection checksum(you have to launch it from the DVD's menu to get it to work, and nobody has a hack to do that AND work with DOS box yet) You have to have a cracked version of each title or the original CD to put in to work with the patches.(same deal with the Star Wars collection, unfortunately)

It's much easier to just buy it here if it was available. Download and play an hour later.
Why am I talking about Tomb Raider in another thread when this is here? I fully support. My TR2 and 3 work flawlessly but TR1 is a mess of everything and I'd love to get a copy that doesn't require tons of patches, custom soundtracks and other tweaking

Anniversary doesn't cut it. It feels like Saturday morning animation version of the original. Once again I get the idea some people think only their opinions matter on which are good old games

It's kind of discouraging that you say that. As far as I can tell, only Tomb Raider fans are posting in this thread.

That goes for every game ever, that's why digital downloads are taking over, they're much more convenient and most people crave convenience.

That doesn't mean it's hard to get these games right now otherwise though. If you really want to play them then get a cheap disc version on amazon and be done with it. The disc will certainly arrive way before GOG puts them up for sale.

One isn't a fan if he doesn't like all the 10 games?

No, actually I was referring to this:

"Once again I get the idea some people think only their opinions matter on which are good old games"

I read it a few times. It seems to be implying bad faith. :(

I know it's a pain when someone doesn't add to the conversation and only pipes in to contradict.. however.. if I may be indulged..

You are quite right about the convenience aspect of digital downloads...however in ABSOLUTELY no way are they taking over.. either now or in the near future. Yes they are becoming more popular, but physical media is still by far the most common way to get games...by a hell of a big margin... a REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, hell of a big margin.

It'll be a longtime before dd's are considered an equal commodity in the eyes of the general public... People still like to hold what they buy, and that doesn't look as if it's going to change anytime soon.... absolutely not this console generation and certainly not even the next...

What's the problem with running TR1 through DOSBox?

In general you are right, and I make that point often. I just read recently that CDs still make up almost 80% of music sales. I don't think streaming and such will ever replace physical media for movies either.

That said gaming seems to be on a different course, and PC gaming is way ahead. There are many games that are only released digitally already, and that group will only grow with time. Ubisoft recently stopped releasing their PC games in boxes in the US and it is likely only a matter of time for another publisher to do the same. For some reason, be it the demographics or simple lack of retailer interest, PC gaming is going all digital very fast.

It sucks because I like boxes a lot, and have a good collection, but at the same time there are benefits like all the great indie games coming out which would never have found a big publisher and shelf space.
You could probably pick up a cheap playstation version of TR1 and run it on an emulator. The game was pretty much made for that platform, PC 3D games were very much in their infancy at the time as you likely remember..

Virama: The original Doom gives me motion sickness now due to the single texture being repeated one billion times. *SPEW* <-- literal.

Interesting fact: I NEVER get motion sickness from anything else, I can read anywhere, do anything but old games give me it. Weird.
You might want to look into simulation sickness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_sickness#Simulation_sickness). It is closely related to motion sickness, but it is not quite the same. It is usually induced by FPS games, especially with no fixed horizon.

About 10 % of the population have it in several degrees, my girlfriend have it and get sick from any game played in first person (she loves Oblivion, but can only play it in third person, something about eyes fixating on the avatar which reduces simulator sickness). You can also have simulator sickness without having motion sickness.

kalirion: What's the problem with running TR1 through DOSBox?
My disc doesn't have the soundtrack. Plus I never need DOSBox so it's waste and configuring it every now and then often gets messy
