Navagon: It's such a shame that it was so misunderstood and otherwise neglected on release. I think that it represents a very interesting direction in which the adventure genre could have evolved.
It's more of a glorious tombstone of that direction. There were more attempts to introduce a self-developing story in the interactive fiction days than there were after TLE. In fact, look up the plot summary of the first section of Infocom's Border Zone. You're in a train compartment on a timer to wipe off traces of murder before the customs officers come in.

Either way, it's a shame. Could never get into Infocom's games though. They seemed to be very much of the school of thought that you should know exactly how the developers want you to play the games, even despite the lack of hints given. I'm not so sad about that attitude dying out.
If it is so good.. I almost regret now that I bought it for some person. =)

The thing that makes this game so epic is that its so NON Linear on what you would assume would be linear...a train.
Climatic and wonderful ending to a beautiful game.
