They aren't just pocketing that money for no good reason though. They will use it to fund the development of other games. Maybe it will go toward giving the next Thief Game a bigger budget. Then again maybe it will go toward some shovelware crap. In then end though, it wont be used just to buy fancy cars for the suits. The players do get something back out of this. I don't like that they put these adds in the loading screens. In my opinion it a symptom of AAA game design. Budgets have just gotten too big. Now they are having to supplement them with these adds.

The solution: cut down the budgets! Here's a simple economic principle for you: in the long run, unsupported excess growth is bad for everyone.

There are tactful ways of making more money and then there are tactless ways of doing it. Ads on loading screens put in after someone has bought the game (paying $50-60)? Tacky all around: Tacky thing to do; Tacky way to do it.

North American here, I have not seen any ads at all... Yet.

It probably would be more enjoyable if the ingame advertising was set up to be setting-appropriate. Coca-Cola: The taste is augmented!
I've played the game for stupidly large amounts of time, on my PS3, and not a single ad to be seen. I would say I've chalked up a good 100+ hours, so is all this fuss over copies of the game through things like Steam?

looks like it but i haven't seen a single user confirm here that they are getting the ads :O
So had a look around, and it is a patch for PC versions that puts these ads in.

I've also now seen a tonne of people saying they'll only pirate the game instead of buying it, because of some little adverts.

PATHETIC, sorry but a tiny ad in a loading screen, or (if it is true) the billboards ingame, do NOTHING to take away from the game. Those people being all "I shall not buy this game or any from this publisher again!" or the people now using this as some sort of platform to rationalise pirating, sorry but you're all idiots.

If this was some game breaking, full screen popup video ad which came up without warning and there was no way around it, maybe, just maybe I could see the gripe. But tiny little ad doing nothing to interupt gameplay at all, welcome to the world, there are ads everywhere, it only stands to reason that you'd have ads in the future, so if anything it makes the game that tiny bit more realistic.

So all in all, to moan about the publisher, and this game, based on such a non impactful thing, seems like just another thing for people to use as an excuse to troll and enter e-pissing contests on something which let's face it, doesn't remotely affect them at all.

An adds about a 2011 blu ray release in a game set in 2027... yeah right sooo realistic... I suppose having iPad ads in LA Noire would have made the game more realistic too. (and since when having adds everywhere has become a good thing)

Since being critical = whining = evil. Either we eat what we're given without a word, or we're stupid whining pathetic people, i guess.;)

If it was something in the vein of the GITS trailer in Syndicate Wars, i wouldn't really mind it that much, but still be concerned. That GITS trailer is the main reason we don't have the Syndicate games here now.

It's kinda Carlinesque:
"Bend over just a little farther so we can stick this big advertising dick up your ass a little bit deeper, a little bit deeper, a little bit DEEPER, you miserable no-good dumbass fucking consumer!"

And with each "i'm ok with stuff", we'll get more and more of this. It's a bit similar to the case of DRMs. I remember telling my friend who was "ok, with steam" a few years ago, that he's just inviting publishers to go even further, and one day he'll see an online requirement to play games. Well, doomsaying or not, it happened.

So yeah, besides putting ads in games that people already paid for, there's the problem of "what will we say "i'm ok with it" to next".

If the development budgets have grown so large that the sales of games alone can't cover them then that's the developers' and publishers' problem, not the gamers' problem. I understand perfectly well that developers and publishers aren't running a charity- they're in it to make money, and they're naturally going to explore all avenues that will accomplish this. However, what developers, publishers, and you need to understand is that gamers aren't running a charity either. They're only going to hand over their money if you're producing a product they're interested in, and selling it at a price they thing is worthwhile for them. Putting in things like in-game advertising tends to piss off a lot of people (whether you think this anger is justified or not is completely irrelevant), and will likely result in many people choosing not to buy the game or only buy it at a lower price, and for people who already bought the game they're probably going to be a bit more wary of any future releases by that developer or publishers. In the end, trying to squeeze extra money out of a title by doing things that cheese off your customers can end up actually causing you to make less money.

Regardless of your feelings on the matter this is the reality of an environment where pirate version of just about any game are readily available and respect for copyright law (as a whole) is virtually non-existent. In such an environment, one of the strongest tools to convince people to buy your game instead of pirating it is goodwill. Paradoxically, customer goodwill seems to be something that most publishers can't seem to piss away fast enough.
I never asked for this...
